The Contracted Ever After (Cordelia and Ronan) novel Chapter 743

Willow dabbed at her tears with a tissue, her voice a mix of sobs and laughter. "Guess I'm giving you something to laugh about, huh, little bro?"

"Not at all," Harold muttered, looking down, a twinge of jealousy still pinching his heart at the mention of Willow's "ex-husband."

After their meal, Willow hopped on her bike to leave.

"Be careful out there," he called after her.

"Yeah, you better head back too," Willow replied with a nod, acknowledging Harold's concern.

Come Monday, Harold couldn't focus at work. His mind was elsewhere. In the afternoon, he video-called his mom and saw her in the hospital.

"What's going on? Who's sick?" he asked Janice.

"It's Callum. He's got a fever. Cordelia brought him in and called Mr. Evans. Now, Mr. Evans has just gone to settle the bill, and Cordelia's dashed home to grab some clothes for Callum," Janice explained.

"I'll swing by in a bit."

"Alright."

After work, Harold pedaled to the hospital where Janice was. He locked his bike up in the rack and went inside.

Ronan had returned from paying the fees. Callum's illness wasn't serious; it was just a sudden spike in fever that had scared Cordelia into bringing him to the hospital. By now, the fever had subsided.

Ronan sat on a couch, eyeing Harold coolly. They hadn't seen each other in a few days, but Harold seemed different somehow—distracted when talking to Janice, a perpetual lightness to his demeanor. Plus, Ronan had spotted a woman from behind on the street days ago, and he was sure Harold had something going on.

"Got someone special in your life, huh?" Ronan ventured.
