Harold sat in silence, knowing he was in the wrong.
“What does she see in you? A young, strapping lad?” Ronan teased.
Harold let out a bitter chuckle. “What could she possibly want from me? She’s got money. Besides, Mr. Evans, can we not tell my mom about this for now?”
“Got it.”
After that, Harold went quiet again.
When Ronan got home, he only shared the news with Cordelia.
Cordelia was even more shocked. “Has Harold lost his mind? Why does he always go for someone else’s girl?”
Ronan gave her a pointed look. “You know, you were someone else’s girl once. Whose girl were you?”
Cordelia fell silent. “We’re talking about Harold here.”
“I’m not talking about anyone else. But Harold falling for someone else’s girl, Victoria needs to know sooner rather than later, or who knows what she might do,” Ronan said.
Cordelia nodded. The first few times she met Victoria, Victoria was always trying to better herself, often asking Cordelia what she was doing wrong and how she could fix it. Cordelia would always say, “You’re fine as you are. Don’t change yourself for some guy. It’s not worth it.”
“Because of me, he’s missed opportunities and held back his career. It’s all my fault. Maybe if I change, he’ll finally take notice of me. Don’t you think, Cordelia?” Victoria would ask.
All Cordelia could do was shake her head. What could she say?
