It really is gone.
What on earth is Caitlin up to?
Tammie started searching for Caitlin’s other Twitter handles. Someone like Caitlin would never just delete her account and disappear—she was too much of an attention-seeker for that. She must have made a new burner account by now.
Just you wait, Tammie thought. She’ll come back claiming she missed her fans too much, and drum up a whole new wave of followers.
But after scouring the internet, Tammie came up empty. No sign of Caitlin anywhere.
She had really quit the internet.
And she’d wiped her tracks clean.
Tammie narrowed her eyes.
What’s her game this time?
Her schemes ran deeper than anyone knew.
Even Tammie couldn’t figure out what Caitlin was thinking, and it was no wonder Ann could never outmaneuver her.
A few minutes later, Tammie put down his phone and glanced up at the driver. “Take me to Gonzales Manor.”
“Yes, sir.”
Half an hour later, the car pulled up in front of the grand gates of Gonzales Manor.
Tammie strode inside.
The butler hurried over to greet him.
“Master Tammie, welcome.”
Tammie nodded. “Where’s my grandmother?”
“The lady of the house is out on business.”
He nodded again. “And Freya?”
“Miss Freya is in the garden, walking the dog.”
“Got it,” Tammie said, waving him off. “You don’t need to follow. I’ll find her myself.”
“Of course, sir.”
Tammie knew Gonzales Manor inside and out. It didn’t take him long to reach the garden.
Spring had fully arrived.
The city’s temperature had risen noticeably.
Caitlin let out a short, incredulous laugh. “Otherwise what?”
Tammie pressed on, “Otherwise, I’ll never acknowledge you as my cousin again. And you can forget about ever calling me your big brother.”
He stared at Caitlin, clearly expecting her to cave.
After all, he was not only an internationally acclaimed graphic novelist but also a successful entrepreneur—the kind of older brother every girl dreamed of having.
Caitlin, coming from a small town, would need her family’s support if she ever planned to marry well.
So, of course, she’d agree.
“Sounds good,” Caitlin said calmly. “Then don’t bother coming back to the Gonzales family. I have a thing about cleanliness.”
Tammie looked stunned, as if he couldn’t believe she’d brush him off so easily. “What…what did you say?”
Cleanliness?
Was she saying she couldn’t stand him?
Caitlin repeated herself, louder this time: “I said, I have a thing about cleanliness!”
If he still couldn’t hear her, she’d be happy to carve it on his headstone.
Tammie drew a sharp breath, then tried a new angle. “I heard you’re interested in chess. I’m good friends with Grandmaster C. If you apologize to Ann and talk Grandmother into taking her back, I’ll introduce you to C and get him to take you on as a student!”
