“Go ahead and try again,” the nurse said, nodding.
Katrina dialed the number once more.
This time, all she got was a busy signal.
Her eyes instantly filled with tears.
The nurse couldn’t help but comment, “Looks like you’ve been blocked.”
Blocked?
The words hit Katrina like the final straw breaking a camel’s back.
With a sudden, guttural scream, Katrina lost all self-control and slammed the nurse’s phone to the floor.
The nurse was stunned. “Hey! My phone!”
She never expected Katrina would smash her phone, too.
Scrambling to pick it up, the nurse pointed at Katrina, furious. “Are you crazy or something? Breaking your own phone wasn’t enough—now mine? That’s the brand new Galaxy 18!”
“How much? I’ll pay you back. I’ll pay you double!” Katrina snapped back, her eyes cold and wild.
The nurse hesitated, a little mollified by the offer. “Fine, pay me. I paid $1,000 for it—no need for double, just cover the original price.”
Katrina didn’t have any cash on her, so she turned to Jeanette. “Give me your phone.”
Jeanette shrank back, her expression uneasy. “I… I…”
A thousand dollars might not have meant much to Jeanette before, but now? That was a hefty sum.
After all, the Howard family was on a downward spiral. Her monthly allowance had already been slashed to just $500.
Otherwise, she wouldn’t have been clinging to Katrina so desperately.
Katrina frowned at Jeanette’s hesitation, her patience wearing thin. “I’ll just log into my own PayPal!”
No! Xavier would never do this to her!
Maybe it was just a card issue. Hands trembling, Katrina tried another card. Same error: frozen.
She tried a third time, and still—nothing.
Jeanette, growing curious at Katrina’s increasingly frantic behavior, sidled over. “Katrina, what’s wrong? Haven’t sent it yet?”
She glanced at the screen and her eyes widened. “Wait… your account’s frozen? The Richards family moves fast, huh?”
The nurse glared at both of them, exasperated. “Frozen? What is this, some kind of game? Are you two just trying to weasel out of paying for my phone?”
Without another word, Katrina yanked off the ring from her index finger and tossed it at the nurse, her voice fierce. “Open your eyes, why don’t you! That ring cost me thirty-eight hundred dollars—you can buy two phones with that!”
The nurse bent down and picked up the ring, examining it closely. It was indeed a classic piece from a luxury brand. Looking up, she warned, “You’re giving this to me of your own free will. Don’t try to take it back later.”
Katrina said nothing. She ripped the IV needle from her hand, threw back the covers, and stormed out of the room.
