Benedict couldn't believe what he had just heard.
Tammie had stopped breathing.
The pain was sharp and visceral, a tearing in his chest. Just days ago, they had been laughing together, and now, in the span of a single day, they were separated by death.
"Sir? Sir, are you still there?" The call was still connected, though the phone lay on the floor. "Please accept my condolences. If you have the time, you should prepare his final clothes and come see him one last time."
After what felt like an eternity, Benedict slowly got to his feet and stumbled out of the villa. He had just stepped outside when he remembered something and turned back. He found an old address book. Inside was Keira's contact information. She was one of the few relatives Tammie had left in the world; she had to be notified.
With a trembling hand, Benedict dialed her number.
It was already past ten o'clock at night. Keira had just changed into her pajamas and was about to go to bed when her phone rang. It was her personal number, one only close friends and family had.
"Who could be calling so late?" she wondered, picking it up. The number was unfamiliar. A sense of unease settled over her.
She answered. "Hello?"
"Hello, may I speak with Keira Templeton?"
*What? Something happened to Tammie? One last time? Stopped breathing?*
Her world tilted on its axis. Tammie was so young. He wasn't even thirty yet.
She took a shaky breath. "Young man, you shouldn't joke about things like this. Did you and Tammie have a fight?"
