The dance began. Jules led Lucy onto the floor, his long fingers lightly holding her hand as they eased into the steps.
Mid-dance, he suddenly spoke. "Speaking from a man's intuition, your ex-husband's visit this time isn't just for business."
"It has nothing to do with me, and I'm not interested," Lucy replied, her voice as faint as mist, her gaze unwavering.
Jules's eyes swept over her face lightly, his tone tinged with helplessness. "My dear Lucy, do you really not understand, or are you playing dumb? His intentions are obviously focused on you."
Lucy's lips curled into a barely perceptible sneer, her words decisive. "So what if they are? He isn't worth it, and he certainly doesn't deserve it."
Jules took in the flash of coldness and resolve in her eyes. "I'm genuinely curious," he said, his tone turning inquisitive. "What exactly did he do to hurt you so deeply?"
Lucy looked up at Jules, whose face was full of curiosity. She teased him with a distant tone. "If you're so interested, why don't you go ask him yourself?"
Kingsley was smoking outside. Peter had looked for him after finishing his social rounds and finally found him thanks to Ethan.
Peter walked closer, looking at Kingsley standing alone in the night, surrounded by smoke. He teased, "What's wrong? Feeling bad? If it hurts that much, go get her back."
Kingsley looked up at him, his voice cold. "What gave you that idea?"
"Then what are you doing standing out here?" Peter asked, unconvinced.
"Just needed a smoke."
Kingsley took a deep drag. The smoke blurred his features, but the image of the two people intimate on the dance floor kept replaying in his mind, refusing to dissipate.
Peter wouldn't let him off the hook. "Are you sure? I was going to take you inside to dance—the partners are about to switch for the second song. You could have danced with your ex-wife."
"Respect is earned. Have you earned it?" Lucy looked up at him, yielding nothing.
As they bantered, Peter, dressed in his sharp suit, walked over slowly. He bowed gentlemanly. "Beautiful lady, may I have the honor of knowing you?"
Jules glanced at the handsome blond man, unaware he was David's brother, and cut in sharply. "Just so you know, her boyfriend is standing right here."
Peter paused, looking Jules over before nodding politely. "Apologies for the intrusion."
With that, he turned and left.
Watching Peter's retreating back, Jules didn't forget to warn Lucy.
