David’s brows drew together as he looked up from his paperwork at Aiden. “Where did he go?”
“He went to the Irvine family’s place. Cedric has already invited thirty-six media outlets from Rockford Bay for a press conference. They’re planning to accuse your wife of abusing and abandoning your adoptive father.”
David pressed his lips together. What on earth was Cedric trying to pull?
“How did you let this happen? Mike was supposed to be out of commission, so how did he manage to slip away?”
Aiden’s face had gone pale. He was starting to sweat. “Sir, actually—”
A clear, calm voice interrupted him. “I told Aiden to do it.”
David’s eyes shifted to Ella. “You did?”
Ella nodded. “I asked Aiden to let Mike go. On purpose.”
David’s gaze turned dark and searching. “Why would you do something like that? They’re about to hold a press conference. That guy is just trying to cling to you forever. I can send people to the Irvine house right now, drag Mike back, and shut the whole thing down. The press conference will be canceled. No one will ever have to know anything you want to keep private. I can make this disappear.”
Ella knew he could. With his power, he really could wipe away every trace of this mess.
She used to wonder, if he learned about her past with Mike, how he would react.
But he didn’t seem to care. Instead, all he wanted was to protect her.
He wanted to shield that broken, hidden part of her from the world, to keep her from being gossiped about or judged, to stop her from getting hurt again.
Ella gently interrupted him. “Mr. Harmon, you don’t have to do anything. Really. I’ll handle it from here.”
She’d handle it herself?
How was she going to do that?
David didn’t believe her. “Ella, are you sure—”
