Ella was genuinely scared. No girl could keep her cool in a moment like this, and she was no different.
“Let me go! Get away from me! Stop!” she screamed, scrambling to save herself. Just then, a loud crash shattered the air as someone kicked the door open.
It was David.
He stormed in, yanked Wesley off her in one swift motion, and threw a punch straight into Wesley’s face. Wesley crashed to the floor, dazed, but David didn’t stop. Another punch, then another, until Wesley’s face was smeared with blood.
Ella struggled to sit up, her voice shaking as she called out, “David… David…”
She kept saying his name, almost like she needed to make sure he was real.
David left Wesley where he was and hurried to her side. She was trembling all over, her fear still raw and obvious.
He saw the angry red slap mark swelling on her cheek. Her dress was bunched up, exposing the skin of her thighs, streaked with red from Wesley’s grip. She looked completely wrecked.
David couldn’t shake the image of what he’d seen when he walked in. Wesley pinning her down, her legs forced apart. The memory made his blood boil.
His voice was rough as he asked, “Did he touch you?”
Ella’s eyes were rimmed with tears, her lashes wet. “No… he didn’t…”
“Are you sure? Let me check.”
He gently lifted her skirt a bit higher, exposing her white underwear. Everything was in place, nothing looked disturbed. Relief washed over David, but his anger hadn’t faded. He looked back at Wesley, ready to go after him again.
Before he could move, Ella grabbed onto him. She wrapped her arms around his waist and held on as if she might never let go. “David, please… don’t hit him anymore. I just want to leave. Take me away… please.”
Ella’s lips trembled. She tried to answer. “I…”
David put his hands on his hips, looking tired and furious, all at once. “Doctor E was giving a lecture today. Every student was supposed to be there. So why did you get all dressed up like this? If Wesley didn’t go after you, someone else would have.”
Ella couldn’t say a word. She was already shaken and scared, and now she just felt so hurt. Tears welled up in her eyes, big and bright, and then started falling, one by one.
She started to cry.
David froze. He stood there for a moment, tense and awkward. “Hey, Ella, why are you crying? Don’t think a few tears will get you out of this.”
But her tears just kept falling, drop after drop, splashing quietly into the bathwater.
