Avery spoke up right away. “My son kidnapped Ella today. Mr. Harmon rushed over, saved her, and took my son into custody. Now, he refuses to let him go. He wants to stand up for Ella.”
Jessa’s face changed. No wonder David had left Doctor E’s lecture so suddenly. He had gone to rescue Ella. Again.
How many times had this happened? The last time, Mike had taken Ella and David had gone after her then too. And now he had even arrested Wesley for her.
The Harmon and Ross families had always been close. Was Ella really worth risking all that for?
Jessa clenched her fists.
Carter gave her a pleading look. “Miss Irvine, everyone knows Mr. Harmon cares about you the most. Nothing we say will help, but you just have to ask, and I know he’ll let my son go.”
Jessa, Peter, and Rachel all smiled knowingly at the mention of her influence.
Jessa’s lips curved into a little smile. “That’s it? No problem. I’ll talk to David right now.”
“Thank you, Miss Irvine. We’ll wait to hear the good news.”
Jessa left the room to find David.
Peter laughed. “Mr. Ross, Mrs. Ross, you really didn’t need to come all the way here for something so small. Don’t worry. Mr. Harmon spoils Jessa. She’ll handle it with just a word.”
Rachel joined in, smiling. “Wesley’s such a catch. So many girls would love to be with him. Ella probably tempted him and led him astray. Come on, let’s have some tea.”
The four of them chatted easily, sipping their tea. Carter and Avery didn’t miss a chance to add, “Mr. and Mrs. Irvine, you really raised an amazing daughter.”
Peter and Rachel beamed with pride. Jessa was their pride and joy.
…
At Briarwood Estate
Jessa’s eyes swept over the red mark on Ella’s face, then looked her up and down with a cold, proud stare. “I heard Wesley took you. What are you going to do about it?”
Ella met her gaze without flinching. “He broke the law. He’ll have to answer for it.”
Jessa let out a little laugh. She moved closer, lips curling in a smug smile. “Don’t get your hopes up. Mr. and Mrs. Ross already came begging me for help. All I have to do is speak up, and David will let Wesley go. If you don’t believe me, just listen by the door later.”
Ella’s lashes trembled.
Jessa lifted her chin, turning to leave, but then paused and looked back with a sly smile. “You just came out of the master bedroom, didn’t you? The bed in there is so soft. I love sleeping in it.”
Ella froze.
Jessa’s voice turned mocking and sweet. “Ella, do you always hide in the shadows, wishing you had what I have? My mom, my David… Sometimes I think you’re just pitiful. No one loves you, do they?”
