In the girls’ dorm, the air was heavy with worry.
“Ow… That really hurts. Lilly, go easy…” Ella winced as Lilly pressed a cold pack to her cheek.
Lilly shook her head, muttering, “Wesley is such a jerk. I can’t believe he did this to you. Where is he now? And Ella, why did you come back here by yourself?”
Earlier, Lilly had opened the door to find Ella standing in the hallway, a bright red handprint on her face. Her arms and legs showed angry marks from where she’d been grabbed. It was late, and she’d come back alone, battered and silent.
Lilly wanted to cry for her.
And where was Wesley now? Jessa had gone to find David, so Wesley was probably already set free.
Ella’s lashes trembled. She leaned into Lilly, hugging her tight. “My face really hurts. I don’t want to talk right now.”
“Alright, I won’t ask. Just let me see if you’re hurt anywhere else. We’ll put on more ointment and by tomorrow you’ll be beautiful again.”
The soft, yellow light in the dorm made everything feel safe and warm.
…
By the next day, after Lilly’s care and a lot of ointment, the handprint and bruises had faded. Ella’s skin was smooth and soft again, like nothing had happened.
They were just about to head to the cafeteria when Carter and Avery suddenly showed up, blocking their way.
Lilly stepped in front of Ella, instantly on guard. “What do you want?”
Without a word, Carter and Avery dropped to their knees right in front of Ella.
Lilly was stunned. “Ella, what’s going on?”
Ella was caught off guard too. She never expected them to kneel to her.
They both stayed on their knees, pleading with everything they had.
Ella looked at them for a moment. “Get up. I’ll call David and ask him to let Wesley go.”
“Really? Ella, thank you, thank you so much!”
“But,” Ella said, her voice steady, “I don’t ever want to see Wesley again.”
Carter agreed right away. “As soon as Mr. Harmon lets him go, we’ll take him out of the country. He’ll never bother you again.”
Ella nodded. “Alright.”
Carter and Avery thanked her over and over before finally leaving.
