Lilly yanked Ella out of bed. “Ella, come on, enough with the sleeping. What did you even do last night? Why are you so tired?”
Ella rubbed her eyes, still half asleep. “I just want five more minutes.”
“No way. Get up. We’re going out. I’m taking you to a bar.”
She dragged Ella along, and before long, they were in a fancy private booth at the club, surrounded by familiar faces. Jessa, Cedric, Sarah, and a few other rich kids were already there.
Cedric stretched out on the sofa. “Jessa, David’s been out of town for two days now, right? He’s coming back tonight, isn’t he?”
David had left on his business trip right after that night. Ella hadn’t seen him since. They hadn’t even messaged each other. That night was supposed to be the end of things between them. No more ties, no more debts. Just one more secret to keep.
Jessa smiled, lips curling up. “Yeah, he’s back tonight.”
“Hey, Jessa, did you hear about Mr. Harmon’s wild highway trip the other night? He was driving so fast, got caught by a speed camera, had to pay a huge fine. Did you know about that?”
Jessa blinked in surprise. She hadn’t heard a thing. But just outside, Ella knew exactly what they meant. She and David had been on that highway together. Talk about a cautionary tale. She’d never let anyone drive like that again.
Cedric shook his head. “What was David thinking, driving that fast? Was he upset or something?”
Ella didn’t want to listen anymore. “Lilly, let’s go.”
She tugged Lilly’s arm, but Sarah suddenly called out from inside the booth. “Jessa, guess what? David bought you a present while he was away!”
Jessa’s face instantly lit up. “Really? What did he get me?”
“A friend of mine just saw him at a boutique overseas. He ordered a diamond necklace. You know, that super popular red carnelian and crushed ice diamond one from Alber?”
Jessa’s eyes widened. She’d been obsessed with that necklace for ages. She never expected David to actually get it for her. It was such a sweet surprise.
Just then, her phone buzzed. A new message.
Ella opened it. It was from David, even though he was still supposed to be away.
He’d sent a photo.
Her heart skipped a beat. It was the red carnelian and crushed ice diamond necklace.
[Do you like it?]
Four words. That was just like him. Always so brief.
He was actually asking if she liked it.
