But she still couldn’t sleep. Soon, there was another knock at the door. Someone else had come.
Who could it be this time?
Ella opened the hospital room door and found Aiden standing outside, out of breath and looking worried. “Mrs. Harmon.”
She stepped into the hallway. “Aiden, what are you doing here?”
Aiden looked anxious. “Mr. Harmon was drugged at the Irvine family’s place. Please, you have to go to Bellemont Manor and check on him.”
“Didn’t he tell you to go find him a girl? I’m not going.” Ella started to go back inside.
“Mrs. Harmon!” Aiden called after her. “He only said that to get under your skin. Didn’t you hear it in his voice? He was just angry.”
Her hand paused on the doorknob.
Aiden pressed on. “That day at the resort, Mr. Moore protected you and got hurt, but you can’t forget what Mr. Harmon did either. You need to see what happened to his hand.”
Ella turned around slowly, her eyes searching Aiden’s face. “What does his hand have to do with me?”
Without another word, Aiden pulled out his phone and opened a video. “Watch this, Mrs. Harmon.”
Ella tapped the screen. The footage showed her standing with her back to the camera. One of Tim’s men lunged at her with a knife. At the last second, David threw himself forward and grabbed the blade with his bare hand.
Ella froze, her breath catching. She had no idea.
“He hurt his left hand protecting you. That night, after you slapped him, he spent the whole night outside your hospital room. The next day, he needed twenty-three stitches. The doctor said if he’d waited any longer, he might have lost his hand for good.”
Aiden gave a small smile. “You’ll have to ask him yourself, Mrs. Harmon. But I think… he might actually be falling for you.”
He was falling for her? David… falling for her?
It seemed impossible. She would never hope for it. The promise he made in that cave years ago was clearly forgotten. Only she remembered.
He had never wanted her, but she still came back to him. She’d always been the one following him, desperate for even a sliver of the love he showered on Jessa.
Could he really have feelings for her?
At Bellemont Manor, David sat alone on the couch. He yanked off his tie, crushed it in his hand, and tossed it aside. His handsome face was set in a hard, unreadable expression, shadows flickering in his eyes.
Just then, the front door clicked open. Someone stepped into the house.
