Jace grabbed a bag and started packing things into it. He didn’t look up, just kept his voice even. “She went home. Mom, we’re just classmates, nothing else.”

Tiffany gave him a knowing look. “I remember there were always girls after you. Didn’t your sister catch some girl slipping a love letter and chocolates into your backpack last time? What was her name, Penny or something?”

Jace finally glanced up. “Mom, can you not bring up those people? Lilly’s not like them.”

Tiffany smiled, a little teasing. “So, in your eyes, Lilly is different from all the girls who like you, huh?”

Jace fell silent and kept packing.

“Jace, you’re not a kid anymore. If you ever meet a girl you really like, don’t let her go. Lilly’s a good one.”

He finished packing, picked up the bag, and helped Tiffany get ready to leave the hospital.

As they walked down the corridor, Jace spoke quietly. “Mom, I’m not thinking about that kind of stuff. I don’t have anything to offer anyone for the future.”

Tiffany stayed quiet for a while. She knew Lilly’s family had money. That was why, earlier with Tina, she made sure to clear up any misunderstandings. She didn’t want anyone talking about Lilly behind her back.

She really liked Lilly. That was why she cared so much.

“Mom, right now all I care about is Dad. One day, I’ll prove he was innocent. I want everyone to know he wasn’t a criminal. He was an undercover cop.”

Tiffany’s eyes shimmered with tears as she squeezed Jace’s hand. “Jace, these things shouldn’t be your responsibility.”
