It definitely wasn’t the kind of video you’d send to your friends. It was, well, the kind with a lot of blushing and not much clothing.

As soon as Jace heard the moans, everything clicked. He shut it off in a panic.

He shot a text to Will. Just two words. “Seriously?”

Will replied with a bunch of laughing emojis. “Come on, Jace, you’ve got a girlfriend now. Time to learn a thing or two. This is what happens when you hit puberty, man.”

“Shut up.”

After that, Will didn’t send anything else.

Jace tried to focus back on the Skeleton case files. He lost track of time, and before he knew it, half an hour had gone by. He sprawled out on his bed, one arm behind his head, staring at the ceiling. His mind was a mess, thoughts tumbling over one another. He used to be so calm.

But ever since Lilly showed up in his life, everything was up in the air.

Almost without thinking, he reached for his phone again and tapped on the video.

In the next room, Lilly and Victoria were already in bed, still chatting quietly.

“Victoria, how’s your mom feeling these days?” Lilly asked softly.

Victoria nodded, her voice sleepy but happy. “So much better. Ever since we got that medicine from the hospital, she seems more comfortable and has way more energy.”

Lilly breathed a little easier. That batch of medicine had been imported, and she’d gotten Dr. Inge to prescribe it for Tiffany at the lowest price possible. They still didn’t know she’d arranged it all.

The medicine was working for now, but it wouldn’t be enough to save Tiffany in the end.

“Victoria, when you get into high school, you can live with me if you want. My house is really close to the school,” Lilly offered.

Tiffany probably wouldn’t make it past Victoria’s final exams. Once she was gone, Victoria would need somewhere to go. Living with Jace wasn’t really an option.
