He met Doctor E?
David had no idea. He stared at Ella, his gaze dark and searching. There was a nagging sense that she was keeping something from him. Her eyes were shining, almost too bright, and when he looked at her, he couldn’t help feeling a little restless.
Just then, Grandma Jill and Rachel came out. Grandma Jill called her name, “Ella.”
Ella turned, her voice calm. “Did you need something?”
Grandma Jill studied her. “You brought your father’s ashes home. Did you lay him to rest?”
Ella let out a cold laugh. “Since when do you care so much about my father’s ashes?”
“Ella, watch your tone. He was my first son. I’m his mother.”
“My father is gone. Drop your act. He wasn’t even your real son. You adopted him.”
Both Grandma Jill and Rachel stiffened, shock plain on their faces. They clearly never expected Ella to know.
Rachel tried to cover. “Ella, how did you find out?”
Ella stepped closer, her voice steady, eyes never leaving theirs. “You were desperate to get pregnant so you could secure your place in the family. But when it didn’t happen, you adopted my dad. The moment he joined the Irvine family, you suddenly got pregnant with Peter. He’s your real firstborn, and Logan’s your youngest. Those two have always been your favorites.
“You played favorites from the start. My dad always knew he wasn’t your biological child, so he kept his head down and never complained. He truly saw you as his mother. He built his own business from nothing, helped his two brothers, and was always devoted to you. As a son and as a brother, he never let anyone in the Irvine family down. Whatever debt you think he owed you for adopting him, he paid off long ago.”
