David picked up the call. On the other end, a rough male voice greeted him. “Hello, Mr. Harmon.”
David kept his face unreadable as he held the phone. “Who are you?”
“You don’t need to know who I am, Mr. Harmon. The only thing that matters is that the person you’re looking for is with me.”
Rachel’s anxious voice broke through. “He must have taken Jessa. Mr. Harmon, please, you have to save her.”
David’s tone was icy. “You have Jessa.”
“That’s right. I’ll let her talk to you for a second.”
A moment later, Jessa’s voice rang out through the phone, panic and fear clear in every word. “David, help me, please. I’m so scared. Please, save me.”
David’s lips pressed into a hard, cold line. “What do you want?”
“Money, Mr. Harmon. I want a billion dollars, and I want it now.”
David let out a cold laugh. “You really think you can get away with kidnapping and demanding a billion dollars? That’s enough to put you behind bars for the rest of your life.”
The man didn't sound the least bit threatened. “Don’t bother trying to scare me, Mr. Harmon. I’m not that easy to intimidate. Does a billion sound like too much for one person? How about for two?”
David’s eyes narrowed. “Two people?”
Just then, Wyatt hurried over, looking panicked. “Mr. Harmon, something’s wrong. Ella’s missing.”
Dr. E still hadn’t shown up, so Wyatt had gone upstairs to check. Ella’s room was empty.
Ella was gone.
David’s hand clenched around his phone. “Is Ella with you too?”
