Doctor E had vanished from the scene for three years, all because of David.
David was only now starting to realize what that really meant.
He looked at Ella, her face delicate and calm. “Ella, I…”
Before he could finish, Ella turned to Lilly and cut in, “Lilly, that’s all in the past. We don’t need to talk about it anymore. Let’s go check out that side.”
“Okay.”
Lilly and Ella started to walk away.
David reached out, catching Ella’s slender wrist, holding her back.
Ella flinched, sucking in a quick breath from the pain.
David’s gaze dropped to her arm. “What’s wrong?”
Lilly immediately pulled his hand away. “Ella got hurt when those kidnappers took her. She’s got a huge bruise on her arm.”
David’s brow creased in worry.
Lilly’s tone turned sharp. “And let’s not forget at that moment, you didn’t even hesitate. You picked up Jessa and left Ella behind. So don’t act like you care about her now. You and Jessa were basically helping those kidnappers.”
David was at a loss for words.
He wanted to ask Lilly. Wasn’t he her cousin too? Did she save all her sass just for him? But he couldn’t argue. He really hadn’t been able to leave Jessa behind.
He let out a soft apology. “Ella, I’m sorry.”
Ella met his eyes. “It’s fine. I’m used to it.”
David felt his heart twist painfully.
Ella gave a small, self-mocking smile. “Between me and Jessa, you’ve always picked her, every single time. I’m just the one who gets left behind.”
That hit David hard, a stinging ache spreading in his chest, impossible to ignore.
