Ella sat down at the blood draw station and glanced at David. “I really don’t want to do this.”
David kept his eyes on her. “You don’t have to, but just be honest with me. Are you pregnant or not? Ella, I hate being lied to, especially about something like this.”
She met his gaze. “I’m not pregnant.”
He nodded. “Alright, then let’s do the test.”
She let out a frustrated sigh. “Mr. Harmon, I’m telling you the truth and you still don’t believe me. What do you want from me? Do you want me to say I’m pregnant just so you can hear it?”
David didn’t answer. He turned to the nurse. “Go ahead and draw her blood.”
The young nurse’s cheeks turned pink as she looked at David, a little flustered. “Sir, could you help your wife roll up her sleeve?”
Wife?
Ella frowned. “You’ve got it wrong. I’m not his wife.”
The nurse blinked, then asked, “If you’re not his wife, how could you be pregnant?”
Ella couldn’t even come up with a reply for that. It was hard to argue with that kind of logic.
David reached over and gently rolled up her sleeve for her. The nurse said, “I’m going to draw your blood now.”
Ella looked away.
David leaned in a little, watching her. “Are you scared of needles?”
She stayed silent.
He teased, “Aren’t you a doctor? How can you be afraid of your own blood?”
Honestly, what kind of logic was that? Ella just ignored him.
Then David’s big hand gently pressed the back of her head, pulling her face into his chest.
His low, steady voice came from above. “Close your eyes. Don’t look.”
