David stared at Jessa, shaking his head. “No way. The baby isn’t Wyatt’s. It’s mine.”
Jessa’s hands balled into fists at her sides, her jaw so tight she thought she might crack a tooth. Why was David reacting like this just because she said the baby was Wyatt’s? Why was he so sure the baby was his?
“David, why are you getting like this?” Jessa asked. “I thought you didn’t even like kids. Or… is it that you want Ella’s baby to be yours? Do you actually want her to keep it?”
David’s eyes narrowed and there was a flash of something dark in them. He didn’t even really know why, but deep down, he just needed it to be his. He wanted Ella to be carrying his child.
Jessa dug into her bag and pulled out a paper. “David, this is Ella’s pregnancy report. The date’s right here. She’s two weeks and three days along. Think about it. Could the baby be yours?”
David looked down at the report in her hand and took it from her. Ella’s name was printed at the top in bold letters. Two weeks and three days pregnant. The math was simple. It couldn’t be his. The last time he’d been with Ella was a month ago. Before that, even longer. For the last month, she’d been with Wyatt. The truth was right there. The baby was Wyatt’s.
Ella was pregnant with Wyatt’s child.
Now it made sense, all the lies, the way she had dodged him at the clinic that day. He’d just been fooling himself this whole time.
Suddenly, David ripped the report into tiny pieces and tossed them in the air, watching the bits drift to the floor. His chest was rising and falling, anger written all over him.
Jessa stepped forward and wrapped her arms around him. “David, Wyatt is her boyfriend now. Of course she’s pregnant with his kid. No wonder she got so mad when we targeted Wyatt. He’s the father of her baby.”
David pressed his lips together, cold and silent.
“David,” Jessa said again, “it’s Ella’s baby with someone else. Let’s just stay out of it.”
Without a word, David shoved her away. He grabbed his black suit jacket and headed for the door.
