Ella shot him a look. “What do you mean?”
David gritted his teeth. “Who told you to wear something so slutty?”
Wait, what?
Slutty?
“David, you want to run that by me one more time?”
His eyes dropped to her miniskirt. “You’re basically showing everything. Are you just hoping people stare at your legs?”
Yeah, the skirt was a little short. Fiona had picked it out for her. Fiona’s words echoed in her head. “Ella just never shows off her legs. Does Jessa really think she’s all that? Tonight, let’s show everyone who really has the best legs in Rockford Bay.”
Ella arched a brow. “So, David, you were staring at my legs?”
David went still.
Ella leaned back against the wall, all lazy grace and confidence. She slowly lifted her right leg, the heel of her shoe sliding along his ankle.
He was in black dress pants that hugged his long legs, all sharp lines and cool restraint.
Her toes trailed up, brushing his calf, slow and teasing.
It was a dare. And a flirt.
David’s eyes were ice. “What are you doing?”
Ella’s lips curled. “Tell me, David. Whose legs do you like more, mine or Jessa’s?”
He stared at her. That little widow’s peak on her forehead made her delicate face even prettier. She looked so elegant, but right now she was bold, trying to tempt him.
He’d gotten a glimpse of her real beauty last night, hidden under those black-rimmed glasses. He just hadn’t realized she was this gorgeous.
Her face... it felt familiar somehow.
He leaned in, his lips almost brushing hers. The way he spoke, though, was pure ice. “Keep dreaming. I’m never touching you. The only woman I love is Jessa.”
He loves Jessa.
He didn’t need to say it. She already knew. Still, the words stung. Not a sharp pain, just something small and persistent, like a bee sting that wouldn’t go away.
At that moment, a gentle voice called out, “David.”
Ella looked up. Jessa had arrived.
Jessa was the Rose of Rockford Bay, a dancer’s grace in every step.
David immediately dropped Ella’s chin and walked over to Jessa. He lowered his gaze, and Ella saw a softness there she’d never seen before. “You’re here.”
Jessa nodded, then glanced at Ella with polite curiosity. “And who’s this?”
She didn’t recognize Ella at all.
