Jonathan couldn’t shake the thought from his mind. If it came down to it, he swore he would pack Harry up that very night and send him straight back to Grenton, no questions asked. The idea of enduring Harry’s antics for an extended period was enough to make him cringe.

Estella, however, had a different perspective. She spoke with a seriousness that caught Jonathan off guard. “He’s a good type, just a little noisy. I don’t think I could handle him long-term. He’s fine as a friend, though.”

Jonathan let out a breath he didn’t know he was holding. Thank goodness Estella wasn’t taken in by Harry’s charm. He felt a wave of relief wash over him, knowing that Estella saw through the surface and recognized Harry for who he really was.

Just then, the door swung open, and Harry came bursting out of the room, already clad in a pair of cheap, worn slippers that he must have picked up from Grenton’s main street.

“You two lovebirds whispering about what?” he called out, his voice booming with excitement. “Hurry up and help me move the mattress. I can’t sleep a wink without it!”

Jonathan exchanged a glance with Estella, who rolled her eyes with a smile. “I’ll go downstairs with him,” he said, his tone resigned. “You should get some rest. Looks like he’s going to keep me busy all night. Harry’s a pain.”

Estella smiled knowingly, nodding in agreement.

As she stepped back into the room, Jonathan couldn’t help but notice how different he felt around Harry. It was almost as if he transformed into a different person, one who was more carefree and willing to indulge in Harry’s antics. Despite the complaints that often spilled from his lips, Jonathan cared for Harry deeply, a fact that warmed Estella’s heart.

After Estella disappeared back inside, Harry clapped Jonathan on the shoulder with enthusiasm that bordered on overwhelming. “Jonathan! Seeing you with a gorgeous girl just now nearly gave me a heart attack!” he exclaimed dramatically. “I was so worried she’d feel awkward, so I kept it cool. You’ve actually got a girlfriend! Wow, wow, wow! Incredible! So you’re not gay after all. Here I thought you’d been secretly in love with me all these years. Guess I was wrong, huh?”

Jonathan recoiled in disgust, swatting Harry’s hand away. “You’re the gay one. I’ve always liked women. And she’s not my girlfriend—we haven’t defined anything yet. Right now, we’re just good friends.”

“Not even a couple yet? Ha! So there really are girls who can resist you? Amazing, she must be something special!” Harry’s laughter echoed through the hallway, and Jonathan felt a headache brewing.

Having this incessant chatterbox around for the New Year was going to be pure torture. Back in school, Jonathan had been the cold, aloof one, the one everyone avoided—everyone except Harry. Somehow, Harry had danced right on his nerves, and despite his thick skin and carefree attitude, he’d managed to worm his way into Jonathan’s life, becoming his closest friend.

Harry swaggered into the bathroom like he owned the place, casually using Jonathan’s face wash without a second thought.

When he emerged, a mischievous glint in his eye, he asked, “Hey, Jonathan, got any face masks?”

Jonathan was preoccupied, busy putting away the pile of local specialties that Harry had brought along.

“No,” he replied curtly.

Harry let out a dramatic sigh. “That won’t do. I’ve got to go out tomorrow. No face mask? My skin will die. Fine, I’ll just use your moisturizer. I forgot to pack mine—winter air’s too dry.”

After slathering on the moisturizer, Harry noticed Jonathan reaching for some cured meat to put in the fridge and immediately halted him. “Don’t refrigerate that! Just hang it outside.”
