Riley had been with Fletcher long enough to know all the details of Vivica's current situation.
Vivica wasn’t surprised she knew, nor was she fazed by her words. Instead, she played along. “You’re right. And because my life is so miserable, there’s no way I’m letting Fletcher go and letting you two live happily ever after.”
That hit a nerve. “You’re twisted! Fletcher doesn’t love you, he loves me! What’s the point of dragging this out?” Riley snapped.
“There is no point. I just can’t stand the thought of you two being happy.”
“You—”
Sensing she had pushed Riley’s buttons enough, Vivica changed her tone. “Actually, it would be simple to get me to agree to a divorce. It all depends on how sincere you are.”
“What do you mean, Vivica? You want money?”
“What else?”
Riley was silent for a moment, then asked cautiously, “How much do you want? You know you can’t make Fletcher leave with nothing.”
“I know. He earned everything we have. I’ve already consulted a lawyer, and he said the same thing.” Vivica’s voice was flat, laced with a tone of reluctant acceptance.
Riley instantly gloated. “Since you already know that, don’t get any crazy ideas.”
“How about this? I need cash urgently. You give me one million, and it’s a deal. The moment the money is in my account, I’ll go with Fletcher to sign the divorce papers. You can have the new life you want.”
Vivica’s sudden offer stunned not only Riley on the other end of the line, but also Quintina, whose eyes went wide.
“Vivica, what are you thinking? A million is nothing! With Fletcher’s net worth, you should be asking for at least ten million!”
Vivica shot Quintina a look, signaling her to be quiet, then continued speaking into the phone. “So, what do you say? Isn’t your ex-husband some rich kid? Don’t tell me he didn’t even give you a million in the divorce.”
Riley felt like happiness had come knocking unexpectedly. But she was still wary, worried Vivica was planning some kind of trick. “Besides the one million, are there any other conditions? What about custody of the child?”
“My son is seriously ill, and his medical bills are a bottomless pit. I’m sure you don’t want that burden, so he stays with me. To be honest, I need this money for his treatment, not for myself.” Vivica continued to play the part of a defeated woman, her voice full of weary resignation.
Riley could barely contain her excitement. “Are you sure? One million, and you’ll divorce Fletcher?”
“I’m sure,” Vivica said firmly. “But let’s be clear. I want ‘you’ to give me one million. Think of it as me selling Fletcher to you.”
“What? You want me to give it to you? Where would I get a million?” Riley protested, her excitement instantly turning to agitation. “If I had a million dollars, do you think I would have come back so desperately to…”
