In a luxury suite in the north wing of the same floor, Joseph had only just found time to visit his mother.

Melanie's condition hadn't stabilized yet, so she certainly hadn't been discharged. The butler, Simon, had been thorough; worried that Vivica would insist on returning the gifts, he'd instructed the medical staff to simply say Melanie had left.

When Simon mentioned that the child was in his room with only the nanny, Joseph had a change of heart and decided to go see for himself.

Following close behind, Roderic was buzzing with anticipation. "We'll definitely get to see the boy this time."

Joseph didn't reply, but he was clearly looking forward to it as well. He only wanted a glimpse of the child, though, without being spotted by Vivica.

But just as they crossed the connecting corridor and rounded the corner into the south wing, they came face to face with Vivica, who was carrying her son.

For a split second, their eyes met, and both parties froze.

Joseph, usually as steady as a mountain, felt an uncharacteristic pang of guilt. He instinctively lowered his head and cleared his throat into his fist.

Roderic glanced at him, his expression a picture of amusement. It was rare to see his boss react this way.

After two seconds of awkward silence, Vivica was the first to recover. "Mr. Baird," she greeted him politely.

Joseph appeared cool and collected, but his heart was racing. "Hello," he responded quickly. Instead of continuing forward, he shifted his path toward the elevators, offering a self-conscious explanation. "The elevator in the north wing is broken."

"Pfft..." Roderic nearly burst out laughing. His ever-dignified boss had just told a blatant lie!

"Oh," Vivica said, unaware of the real reason for his presence. She had no idea he was there to secretly observe her son. She nodded and then spoke to the child in her arms. "Chaim, say hello to the gentleman."
