"Yeah. I got lost, and I asked to borrow his phone, but he ignored me," Chaim reported from the safety of his mother's arms, looking up at Joseph with a pout.
Listening to the little boy's accusation, Joseph's usually stoic expression crumpled with embarrassment. He vaguely recalled the incident. The thought that this child might be his brother's flesh and blood—the only piece of him left in the world—made him deliberately soften his features.
"I was in a hurry for something important last time. I didn't mean to ignore you," he explained earnestly to the little boy.
Roderic nearly choked with laughter, quickly covering his mouth. His boss sounded like he was forcing his voice into a higher pitch just for the kid.
Vivica was a bit confused. "Mr. Baird, when did you meet my son?"
Before Joseph could answer, Roderic jumped in. "Last week. The little guy got lost in the north wing, crying for his mommy. We happened to run into him just as you were coming out of the elevator. You were in such a rush, you probably didn't notice us."
"Oh... I remember now," Vivica said, recalling the frantic moment when she thought her son was missing. She had indeed been too preoccupied to pay attention to anyone else.
"It's a small world. I can't believe I met Mr. Baird so long ago," she said with a smile.
"It really is. Fate works in mysterious ways," Roderic added, shooting another glance at his boss.
Joseph, however, was still fixated on the little boy, his expression a complex mix of surprise, excitement, and a touch of fear.
Vivica thought Joseph was acting strangely today, constantly staring at her son. She remembered how, upon first meeting Joseph, she had been struck by a faint resemblance between him and her son.
Could he be noticing it now, too? Was he shocked?
