“Of course. I’ll put it in the car for you,” Joseph replied with a nod.
Without a second glance at Fletcher, Vivica turned and walked into the registry office.
As they sat down in front of the clerk, Fletcher turned to her. “Vivica, are you sure you want to go through with this?”
Vivica couldn't help but laugh. “Are you out of your mind, Fletcher? You’re the one who insisted on this divorce. Your old flame, who is also your new one, is waiting for you right outside.”
Fletcher frowned, his expression a mixture of regret and reluctance.
The clerk, sensing the tension, tried to intervene. “If you’re having second thoughts, you should go home and think it over. Marriage is a serious commitment, and couples always have—”
Before he could finish, Vivica slapped the divorce agreement down on the desk. “We’re getting divorced. We’ve thought it through.”
Fletcher’s face darkened at her resolve. He turned to the clerk and said grimly, “We’re getting a divorce.”
They followed the procedure and submitted the signed agreement.
The clerk explained, “There is a 30-day cooling-off period. If you do not return to finalize the divorce after this period, the filing will be voided, and your marriage will remain legally intact.”
Vivica thanked the clerk and stood up, ready to leave.
Fletcher followed her out and couldn’t resist asking, “Are you really okay with giving up Chaim?”
Vivica turned back to him. “I’m not. But are you willing to give him to me?”
“No,” Fletcher said flatly. “You’re the one who broadcasted my infertility to the world. Chaim is the only child I’ll ever have.”
“Oh,” Vivica said, the realization dawning on her. “So you went back on your word just to get back at me. You’re using our son as a weapon.”
By then, they had stepped outside. Riley rushed over, shamelessly linking her arm with Fletcher’s. “Fletcher, how did it go? Is everything settled?”
Fletcher’s expression was grim, but he nodded. “It’s done. We just have to wait for the 30-day cooling-off period to end, then come back to get the certificate.”
Joseph, who had just returned from putting the money in the car, heard this and a faint, ironic smile touched his lips.
Riley, still oblivious to the trap, was beaming with joy. “That’s wonderful! I thought this divorce would drag on for a year, but I can't believe you're free so soon.”
