The Paper Wife’s Empire novel Chapter 109

“I’ve had a full check-up. I’m perfectly healthy. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with my fertility. If you don’t believe me, I can send you the report right now; I’ve kept it on my phone all this time.”

Ramona’s calm, matter-of-fact tone hit Winnie like a sledgehammer.

Just a moment ago, Winnie had been fuming at Ramona’s attitude. Now, with one sentence, Ramona had lobbed a grenade right into the room, leaving Winnie completely stunned.

“What did you say? You’re not infertile? That’s impossible… Jotham adopted a child for your sake!”

Winnie could hardly process it.

Eulalia, spotting her chance, jumped in with a sneer. “Oh please, Ramona, could you lie any harder? You say your check-up was fine, but you and my brother went two years without having a child. Are you trying to tell us Jotham’s the one with the problem?”

“Maybe he is,” Ramona replied, narrowing her eyes with a sly smile. “That’s really something you all should ask Jotham. Why is it that, despite my good health, he wouldn’t sleep with me for two years? Why did he have to go and adopt a child out of nowhere, just to keep you all quiet?”

Eulalia clamped her hand over her mouth, suddenly uneasy.

No way… Could her brother really…?

Just then, Jotham walked in behind Ramona, catching the tail end of her words. His face turned ashen.

Ramona already knew about her own health? When did she find out?

After an initial wave of panic, Jotham forced himself to stay composed. “Ramona, when did you have this check-up?”

At the sound of his voice, Ramona’s eyes went cold. But her face remained impassive. She didn’t even bother to look back. “A little while ago. It was just a routine check.”

“Ramona, was it a reputable clinic? When we did our marriage screening, your report definitely showed… issues. But if you’re sure the new results are clear, maybe there was a mistake before. That would be wonderful! Still, why didn’t you tell me sooner?”

Ramona glanced at him. Jotham’s act was flawless—his words, his expression, everything radiated the joy of a man who’d regained something precious. For a moment, she almost believed him.

“I simply didn’t have the chance to tell you. And honestly, I was worried—what if the problem wasn’t me, after all? I mean, you were the one who suggested adoption, weren’t you?”

She let her gaze drift from Winnie to Jotham, then smiled sweetly.

Her implication couldn’t have been clearer. All along, the problem had been Jotham’s.

The room fell silent. Winnie and Eulalia looked as if they’d just swallowed a bug, completely deflated.

“Liliane, I brought you some supplements. Please, take care of yourself. Don’t let anything upset you. Nothing is worth risking your health.”

Ramona’s voice was gentle, her concern for Liliane as genuine as ever. Even if they could never be family again, Ramona would always remember how Liliane had once supported and protected her.

“Ramona, you’re shameless! My grandmother treated you so well, and now that she’s sick, you just grab something cheap off the street and think you can bring it here?”

Eulalia eyed the plain plastic bag Ramona had set down, then looked at the mountain of expensive gifts her own family had brought, stacked neatly by the bedside. She let out a derisive snort.

No matter how put-together Ramona tried to look, after leaving the Holt family she was nothing but a paper tiger. She couldn’t even afford a decent gift. How long could she keep up this act?

“Ramona, if you can’t afford anything decent, don’t bother bringing gifts at all. You’re just making it look like Jotham mistreated you.”

Winnie frowned in annoyance and signaled to a housekeeper. “Take that cheap thing out with the trash.”

A plastic bag, like something you’d use for garbage, what kind of supplement comes in a bag like that?

Ramona might have spent two years in the Holt family, but she still acted like a small-town girl. No sense of dignity whatsoever!
