Shock flickered in Brianna’s eyes.
The two of them had always kept to the shadows, slipping away from prying eyes, rarely getting a moment alone. It hadn’t been easy. She’d stumbled through a long-distance relationship, given birth to his child against all odds, and finally fought her way to his side.
“It’s just for a while. I promise, once my grandmother leaves and things settle down at the company, I’ll find another way.”
Jotham spoke without meeting her gaze, his head bowed, voice barely above a whisper—so soft and defeated, she almost didn’t recognize him.
“How long is ‘a while’? And besides, Milo is still so little. He can’t be away from me…”
Panic crept into Brianna’s voice. Jotham’s demeanor genuinely frightened her.
“It’s because of Milo.” He broke the silence suddenly, his voice hoarse.
“Jotham, what’s going on? What does this have to do with Milo?”
Her nerves snapped. She grabbed his arm, demanding answers, and only then did Jotham finally spill everything that had happened that day.
He hated seeing Brianna hurt. He didn’t want her and their son torn apart, and the very last thing he wanted was for Milo to get caught in the crossfire.
But somehow, they’d landed themselves in a dead end. No way forward. No way back. All they could do was grit their teeth and keep going.
“Why? What did we ever do wrong by being together? Isn’t all of this because of your family? If we’re already trapped like this, why not just tell them the truth right now? Tell them Milo is your son—that we’re the real family!”
Brianna, frantic, reached for her phone, but Jotham darted forward, grabbing her and forcing her back onto the couch.
“Are you out of your mind?”
“I think you’re the crazy one! Jotham, are you really going to abandon your own son just to save yourself? Do you even know what they’d do to Milo? He’s only five—”
“They won’t hurt Milo. If you just go overseas, I’ll find a way to bring him back.”
“Do you even hear yourself? Jotham, are you even a man anymore?”
This time, Brianna truly lost it. Tears streamed down her face as she lashed out, slapping him hard across the cheek.
Jotham didn’t dodge, letting her hit and curse him as much as she needed. Only after she’d exhausted herself did he gently release her wrists.
“You think telling them the truth will magically let us be together? My grandmother is holding my grandfather’s will. If she cuts us off, everything the Holt family owns will have nothing to do with us. I’d have nothing left, how would I take care of you and Milo?”
“And if Ramona finds out, this whole mess will turn into a scandal. Do you really think we’d still have a place in Havencrest City?”
Jotham’s words hit like icy needles, each one slicing straight into Brianna’s heart.
She’d already cut ties with her own family. If Jotham was cast out of the Holts too, how could the two of them ever manage to raise Milo?
“Jotham…”
Brianna tried to get another word in, but he was already out the door, leaving her with no room to argue.
Furious, Brianna grabbed a glass and hurled it at the front door, then broke down, screaming herself hoarse.
Why wouldn’t he believe her? Why did all the pain always have to fall on her?
The Holts could all rot in hell. Ramona most of all.
Just as she was about to explode, her phone buzzed, snapping her out of her rage.
It was a message in Jotham’s old college group chat—someone was celebrating.
She glanced at the screen and realized it was from a former student of hers: Kendall Wallace. He’d started out in finance, but later switched to journalism. Brianna had personally helped him navigate the transfer and handled all his applications.
Now, Kendall had finally landed a job as a reporter for Havencrest City’s public news station. Everyone was congratulating him.
A flicker of emotion crossed Brianna’s eyes as old memories surfaced.
The only reason she’d gone out of her way to help Kendall back then was because, while Jotham was busy chasing after Ramona, Kendall had been just as relentless in his pursuit of her, too.
