The Paper Wife’s Empire novel Chapter 152

He was the head of a top financial empire… he was Ethan. And yet, in front of everyone, he’d dropped to one knee and proposed to a woman.

Even for someone like Ramona, daughter of the illustrious Covington family, this was a public honor beyond compare.

Inside, Ramona was a storm of emotions, her eyes brimming with tears that threatened to spill at any second.

Ethan’s brows were drawn together, his expression intensely serious. Those deep, unfathomable eyes—like the night sea scattered with starlight—were fixed on her face, holding her in their gravity. His gaze melted the last of the ice in her heart, sending warmth flooding through her like sunlight after a winter storm.

“Of course I will, Ethan,” she whispered. A smile broke through her tears, and at last, they slipped free, tracing glistening paths down her cheeks.

Her voice was as soft as a feather drifting to earth. Ethan’s face flushed, and he instinctively stood and swept Ramona into his arms once again.

The moment they embraced, the entire room erupted in applause. Someone even let out a delighted whoop. A few sentimental society ladies dabbed at their eyes with tissues, quietly wiping away tears.

Their own marriages and courtships had always been grand, proper affairs, but to be genuinely overjoyed about tying the knot? That was almost unheard of. Ethan and Ramona—together, they were so perfectly matched it made people ache with envy.

With thunderous applause and heartfelt blessings all around, Ethan led Ramona back to their seats.

The earlier awkwardness had vanished without a trace. Now, no one was thinking about Ramona’s past—only about the beautiful proposal they’d just witnessed. In everyone’s eyes, for Ramona to have earned the approval of the Jordon family and Ethan’s devotion, she must be exceptional herself.

So nobody gave another thought to the hurtful things that had been said before.

Only Solenne sat seething, biting her lip so hard she nearly drew blood. “That manipulative woman, what a show-off.”

Wisteria glanced at her, voice cool. “Well, at least her show is worth watching. Unlike some people, who can’t even get the chance to put on a show.”

“Wisteria, are you looking to get slapped?” Solenne snapped, but her mother quickly coughed in warning.

If it weren’t for the fact that the party wasn’t over yet, Solenne would have slapped Wisteria right then and there. But she held back, for now.

No matter. If she couldn’t bring Ramona down, she’d make sure Wisteria paid the price. She’d settle the score, little by little.

What was meant to be an ambush had turned into a proposal party where Ramona was showered with respect. Melinda felt utterly humiliated. She barely touched her food before making her excuses and leaving, claiming she wasn’t feeling well.

Shortly after Melinda left, the Jordon family took Ramona away as well. With that, the evening was more or less over.

Holden, acting as the family’s representative, stayed to see the guests out.

As Fenton was escorting Yancey out, they ran into the Huxley family. Wisteria had changed into another dress and was quietly trailing behind them.
