Solenne’s words hit Wisteria right where it hurt. Wisteria clenched her fists, biting down on her lip in silence. Their gazes locked, neither willing to back down an inch.
At last, Wisteria gave a cold, mirthless laugh. “So what if I’m just serving people? If you’re so eager for a show, then keep your eyes wide open.”
She picked up the tray, spun on her heel, and strode into the private lounge.
Solenne curled her lips in a smirk and followed her inside.
The lounge buzzed with excitement. It was Halcyon’s birthday, and since she was a diehard fan of Huxley Toys, Yancey had picked a Huxley Toy venue to host her party, clearly hoping to please her.
But Halcyon had only invited two close girlfriends from their social circle. The rest were Yancey’s old friends: childhood buddies, former classmates, a few people he worked with—people he’d known for years.
Yancey used to always hang around Wisteria; it was only in recent years that he’d finally cut ties for good. Half the people here knew Wisteria, and most of them were well aware that Yancey had once chased after her, only to get dumped in the end.
Yancey had a good reputation—friendly, easygoing, the kind of guy everyone liked. So even though he never spoke about what happened between him and Wisteria, everyone just assumed she was the heartbreaker.
And with Solenne’s big mouth, even those who hadn’t witnessed the drama firsthand had heard all about Wisteria and Yancey’s messy past.
Wisteria had dated six guys in total, the last breakup happening not long after things ended with Yancey. She was single now, but Solenne had said she attended some fancy mixer just last week. In their circles, she was pretty well known as a serial dater.
When Wisteria walked in, it felt like the air itself froze.
Yancey’s friends never expected to see her working as a server at her family’s venue, let alone serving Yancey and his fiancée with her own hands.
It was the kind of spectacle you’d only see once in a lifetime. No one dared say a word, but everyone was dying to watch the drama unfold.
Those closest to Yancey immediately glanced his way, wondering if he’d orchestrated this for revenge. Was this payback for a broken heart, showing off his new fiancée and humiliating his ex?
But given Wisteria’s reputation, nobody felt sorry for her. If anything, they felt a secret satisfaction for Yancey.
Only Yancey himself looked anything but pleased.
Wisteria set the tray down, already halfway out the door when someone called her back.
“Hey, aren’t you going to let us know what’s being served? That’s pretty basic service, isn’t it?”
She turned, her voice icy. “Here are your fruit platters and snacks. Everything you ordered is on the table.”
The tone drew immediate disapproval from Halcyon’s girlfriends.
