The Paper Wife’s Empire novel Chapter 191

Holden was momentarily at a loss for words after Ramona’s retort.

“So, Ramona, does this mean you’ve known all along about the partnership between Holt Group and our company?”

Ramona drew a slow breath, turned, and stepped closer to Holden. A faint, amused smile played on her lips.

“There are so many corporate partnerships. I’m not exactly bored enough to monitor every deal we make. But I do have to say, Mr. Covington, I admire just how persistent you are when it comes to keeping tabs on me.”

Her words dripped with sarcasm, but before Holden could answer, Ramona took out her phone, tapped a few times, and sent him a file.

Holden’s phone chimed. He glanced at the screen, and his expression darkened instantly.

“Ramona, have you been investigating me?”

“Right back at you.”

She didn’t bother denying it. Today, she’d come to lay everything on the table with Holden. As fellow members of the Covington family, and given his years of loyal service to the company, she didn’t want to be petty. But Holden’s endless scheming had finally pushed her patience to its limit.

Everyone knew Holden was Melinda’s right-hand man, and while the dirt Ramona had uncovered was minor, if she wanted to dig deeper, it could become a very big problem for him. At the very least, she could easily threaten his standing within the Covington Group.

Holden’s face went a shade paler. There was no way Ramona had gotten this information on her own. It had to be the Jordons who’d helped her.

He forced himself to look unfazed, fixing Ramona with a half-smile. “Do you really think these little tricks are enough to take me down? Without the Jordon family, you’re nothing.”

“Even without the Jordons, I’m still Benedict’s daughter. Besides, Ethan is my husband. There’s nothing wrong with me relying on the Jordons.” Ramona recognized Holden’s attempts to provoke her and responded with even more composure. “But Mr. Covington,” she added, pausing for effect, “do you really think you can rely on your mother, Melinda?”

Holden didn’t answer, but it was clear he knew she wasn’t finished.

“She’s always been quick to cut her losses. You’ve followed Melinda for years. Don’t tell me you don’t know her style.”

Ramona didn’t bother with subtlety.

Holden’s eyes flickered with disdain. “Trying to sow discord now, Ramona?”

He almost found it funny. He was usually the one manipulating from behind the scenes; this was the first time someone was trying such a clumsy trick on him.
