Melinda let out a cold laugh and took a sip of her wine.
If Ramona left to be with Ethan, she would fall right into Melinda’s trap. If she stayed, the Jordon family would see her as heartless and abandon her. Either way, Ramona would lose.
A chill ran down Holden’s spine, but he managed a smile. “A self-important woman like Ramona is no match for you, Mom. I’m sure one day she’ll regret not taking your advice and giving up her claim to Covington Group.”
Melinda sighed contentedly. “Go get some rest.”
“Yes.” Holden bowed and left the room, the smile vanishing from his face the moment the door closed. Ramona’s words echoed in his mind again. A woman like Melinda would never adopt a child for no reason.
...
Meanwhile, Ramona had her assistant book the next available flight to find Ethan. The news from Fenton had shattered her composure. The only thought in her mind was to see him, to know for herself that he was safe.
If Fenton was exaggerating and his injuries weren't serious, he would have contacted her. The memory of his silence and Ash’s evasiveness now filled her with a terror that consumed all rational thought. She couldn't calm down.
She couldn’t even continue the conversation with Fenton. She shot to her feet, her legs nearly giving out from under her. Fenton, seeing that she was on the verge of collapse, quickly tried to reassure her, saying that he had only heard rumors, that perhaps Ethan was already out of danger.
Ramona struggled to breathe, her eyes red and swimming with unshed tears. She was speechless. Fenton, not daring to let her drive in this state, offered to take her to the airport himself.
Halfway there, Ramona managed to compose herself enough to try calling the Jordon family to confirm the news, but both Florence’s and Shelby’s phones were off.
“They must have already gotten the news and are on their way to him,” Fenton said. He figured they probably didn’t want to worry her.
