The Paper Wife’s Empire novel Chapter 221

Solenne was thrilled to hear Yancey was in trouble. Without him around, she could torment Wisteria as much as she pleased, and no one would step in to protect her.

She never expected, however, that Wisteria would be so concerned about Yancey that she would actually swallow her pride and beg Solenne for more information.

Solenne didn’t know the details of Yancey’s predicament, but the more desperate Wisteria was, the more determined she was to keep her mouth shut.

That left Wisteria with only one option: Fenton. Even though she knew he couldn't stand the sight of her.

Ordinarily, Wisteria’s pride would never allow her to endure someone’s scorn. She would rather die than set herself up for humiliation at the Covington estate.

“You know you're not welcome here, Miss Wisteria,” Fenton said, his politeness barely masking his fury. “See yourself out.”

He was already on edge, and maintaining even a shred of civility was the most he could muster.

As he turned to leave, Wisteria spoke, “Were you just on the phone with Melinda? If I’m not mistaken, she’s trying to use Yancey to force your hand, isn't she?”

Wisteria had no time to worry about what Fenton thought of her; she had to expose the secret she’d overheard.

Getting involved in the Covington family’s affairs was a surefire way to meet a nasty end—a risk Wisteria, who could barely protect herself, knew all too well.

Fenton froze. When he turned back, his gaze was sharp and menacing, chillingly hostile.

“Miss Wisteria, some things are better left unheard and forgotten. That's the best advice I can give you.”

“Fenton, I know you have your prejudices against me, and I couldn't care less what you think of me. But please, believe me when I say that I genuinely don't want anything to happen to Yancey. I came here today because I want to help.”

Wisteria summoned her courage, though her palms grew slick with sweat.

Growing up, Yancey was the only person she had ever truly trusted. In her eyes, everyone else was suspect, especially the members of powerful families like the Covingtons and the Huxleys, who would devour you whole and not even spit out the bones.

“You?” Fenton scoffed. “How could you possibly help? Miss Wisteria, you should know that if you truly wanted to help Yancey, you’d stay as far away from him as possible.”

“If it weren’t for you, the Loring family would have never targeted him in the first place. He’s not a young man anymore; he should be settling down. You don’t love him. Besides toying with his emotions, do you also intend for him to waste his life and his future on you?”

Fenton knew it was pointless to vent his anger on a pampered young woman, but she had plagued his son for too long, and he couldn’t swallow his resentment. And now she had the audacity to stand here and lecture him.

“I…”

Wisteria wanted to explain, but the words died on her lips, lacking the conviction to be spoken. Her feelings for Yancey had never been just a game.
