The Paper Wife’s Empire novel Chapter 237

Though exhausted, Ethan managed a faint smile. “You’re right, Grandpa. I need to get better quickly.”

Normally, when his grandparents teased him about marriage, he would ignore them. But now that he truly had Ramona as his wife, he was surprisingly compliant. It seemed having a wife brought out his devoted side, just like his grandfather.

But his voice was still weak, and the softer it was, the more it tugged at their heartstrings.

Shelby, seeing how close Ethan and Ramona were, was moved to tears. She discreetly wiped them away and took Florence’s hand. “Let’s go. Let Ramona stay with him.”

Florence nodded, finally able to breathe a sigh of relief. The two of them needed each other right now, and no amount of family concern could compare to the healing power of love.

“Ramona, we’ll leave him in your hands.”

“Grandma, please don’t say that. It’s no trouble at all to take care of Ethan.”

“If you need anything, just tell Ash, or call me or Shelby. We’re always here. And don’t wear yourself out. Get some rest.”

After a few more words of advice, Florence glanced at Ethan. He said nothing, but a faint smile touched his dry lips. He was grateful for the time alone she was giving them, and a look of thanks passed between him and his stepmother.

Once everyone had left, the room was quiet again.

When Ramona started to get up, Ethan’s hand shot out to stop her.

She couldn’t help but smile. “I’m not leaving. I’m just getting you something to eat. You have to take your medicine after.”

Ethan reluctantly let go. Even with her right there in the room, he didn’t want her to be a single step away.

A familiar, unsettling possessiveness began to stir deep within him, but he quickly suppressed it. He was different now. He had left that dark past behind him. Ramona wouldn’t abandon him. He couldn’t let her see that ugly side of him.

The medication would make him sleepy, and he wanted to spend more time with her, so he was reluctant to take it. Ramona had to feed it to him, one pill at a time. As long as it was her offering it, he would swallow it, no matter how unwilling.

There were seven different pills, and she fed them to him in several batches. The last two were especially bitter, and since the water was gone, she gave them to him with a kiss.

The taste of her was intoxicating. He held her, kissing her deeply until she was breathless and had to bite his lip to make him stop.

Thankfully, the medicine took effect quickly. Even a man of his strength couldn’t fight off the heavy wave of drowsiness.

“Ramona, you know, I had a dream while I was unconscious,” he murmured, his eyes closed, his voice as soft as a whisper.

Ramona, held in his arms, didn’t dare to move. “What kind of dream?”
