The Paper Wife’s Empire novel Chapter 314

Ethan had gotten the message yesterday afternoon, but he had been so wrapped up in Ramona that after sending a quick confirmation, he had promptly forgotten about it. His mind had room for nothing but her.

"Grandma," he said, emerging from the bedroom. He had changed into a crisp shirt and trousers, his usual commanding presence replacing the softer man he was when they were alone. Only the lingering tenderness in his eyes when he looked at Ramona betrayed him.

Ramona smiled and took his hand. "You had an appointment with Grandma and you didn't tell me?"

"I forgot," he mumbled, a hint of apology in his voice. He should have scheduled it for after Ramona left. But Florence had explained that Dr. Yeton was in town for a global lecture series and this was his only window of availability. For his family's peace of mind, and for Ramona, Ethan steeled himself and sat down across from the man he least wanted to face.

Dr. Yeton, a calm, steady man with thick-rimmed glasses, had a warm and approachable demeanor. But even as they exchanged greetings, he could sense Ethan's tension. The sight of the doctor brought back a flood of unwelcome memories: cold, sterile rooms, the pitying sighs of countless therapists, the heavy weight of his own despair.

"Relax, dear," Florence said, sensing the stiffness in the air. "Dr. Yeton is just here for a chat, not a formal examination."

Ramona felt Ethan's hand tighten in hers and saw his expression darken. She gently stroked his thigh. "Grandma and I will step out for a bit. You two can talk. I'll be back soon."

She wanted to stay, but she worried her presence would only make him more uncomfortable.

As she started to rise, however, Ethan's hand shot out and grabbed hers. His head was bowed, but his grip was firm. Even in his most dreaded moments, his first instinct was to keep her close.

Ramona hesitated. After a moment, Ethan slowly released her.

"It's quite alright, Mrs. Jordon, you can stay," Dr. Yeton said, his voice gentle and reassuring. "We're just having a conversation. You're husband and wife; there's no need for secrets." He gave her a kind, calming look.

Ramona glanced at Florence, who smiled and suggested she go out to pick up some lunch for everyone. Dr. Yeton's assistant rose to accompany her.

"You want to find out?" he murmured, his eyes sparkling. Before she could answer, he leaned in and whispered, "We could have one of our own."

Ramona's face turned beet red. She gave him a light shove. They were supposed to be having a serious therapy session.

Dr. Yeton chuckled. "So, Mr. Jordon, you're not through with your honeymoon yet, I take it? Any exciting plans you'd care to share with a lonely bachelor like me?"

The session continued in this vein, more like a casual chat than a consultation.

To Ramona's surprise, Ethan opened up, talking freely about their plans, their life together. He spoke of Ramona with such open adoration and tenderness that she often had to stop him, her cheeks burning.

"Mr. Jordon," Dr. Yeton asked, "what is it you love most about your wife?"
