There was simply no way either of us could afford to take that chance right now.
Yet, that map… If it was genuine, and the artifacts truly existed, then maybe—just maybe—we could resolve everything tonight. What if we managed to find those relics, burn them immediately, and finally put an end to this curse forever? The mere possibility sparked a flicker of hope deep inside me.
But the idea of confessing everything to Alexander before we knew for sure was terrifying. What if the artifacts weren’t there at all, and we ended up hitting another dead end? Worse still, what if destroying them didn’t change anything at all?
I wasn’t sure I could stomach that risk.
Still, it boiled down to this: take the chance or face banishment. And right now, the thought of being completely cut off from my son—forever, without even the chance of visits—was more terrifying than any other consequence I could imagine.
So, I made my decision. I knew Alexander would want me to try. Liam would want me to fight.
“Alright,” I said, drawing in a steadying breath. “Alexander, I’m—”
Before I could finish, the doctor’s voice interrupted sharply.
“Alpha King? Sorry to break in, but we need some signatures.”
The moment shattered. Alexander turned toward the doorway where the doctor stood, clipboard in hand.
“I’m afraid now isn’t the best time—” Alexander’s voice was low and tense, but the doctor cut him off.
“It’ll only take a moment. Alpha Liam named you as his healthcare proxy. If anything happens, you’ll be the one making decisions for him. I just need a few signatures to make it official.”
Alexander let out a long sigh and extended his hand. “Fine. Make it quick.”
“Of course, Alpha.” The doctor handed over the clipboard. “Sign here, initial here… This is the consent form.”
While Alexander was preoccupied, Lilith and I exchanged urgent, fearful glances behind his back. She subtly nodded toward the door, her eyes silently asking the question I was already wrestling with: Should we run now, while we still had the chance? Or stay and risk telling Alexander the truth, even if it meant condemning him?
I bit my lip, torn, but ultimately chose to flee.
“Those little—” I ground my teeth and spun around sharply.
Lilith and Stella had vanished while I was distracted. They had fled like cowards.
They were hiding something. Something enormous, something tied to Liam.
Whatever it was, I wasn’t about to let them get away with it any longer. I would track them down relentlessly, like a hunter after prey.
Without hesitation, I stormed out of the room and reached deep inside myself—into the place where the mate bond that should never have existed still lingered faintly. I focused, letting my connection to it grow stronger and sharper until I could almost see it shimmering in the air, a golden thread leading me straight to Stella.
And as I followed that thread, I made a silent vow: the moment I caught that liar, that traitor, I would sever this bond and banish her forever.
No more lies. No more betrayals.
