The Heir And The Servent Started From A Bet novel Chapter 118

Chapter 118

Alex barely made it into the office before the door is burst open with a loud bang.

His father.

Storming in like a storm on legs, jaw tight, eyes filled with a cold kind of fury. He tossed a folded newspaper onto Alex’s desk, the loud thud echoing around the quiet room.

“What is this madness, Alex?”

Alex didn’t even flinch. He sat back in his chair, slowly picking up the paper. The front page stared back at him: a photo of him and Mia from the unicorn party. Her hand in his. Their faces close. Too close.

The headline was bold. Suggestive. And cruel.

“Just when you are about to get married?”

He exhaled slowly, not bothering to hide the tiredness on his face. “I told you I’m not interested in that marriage.”

His father narrowed his eyes.

“Me and Zoe have broken up,” Alex said, voice firm. Steady.

His father’s stare sharpened. He didn’t say anything right away. Just stood there for a moment, judging. Measuring. As if trying to find the right piece to move on a board he thought he controlled.

Then, without a word, he turned and walked out.

The door slammed shut behind him.

Alex sat there for a few seconds, his fingers still brushing the edges of the paper. The photo was harmless to anyone else- just two young people at a glamorous event. But to his father, it was an act of war. A declaration of disobedience.

He let the paper drop to the desk.

Then, slowly, he dropped his head into his hands, pressing his forehead to the cool surface of the table. His heart was a mess of frustration and exhaustion.

Coming to the office this early was also part of the plan.

The plan.

The one he’d been working on quietly for over a year now.

He wasn’t just fighting for himself. He was fighting for his mother and brother. Fighting to pull them out of the shadow of a man who only knew control and pain. A man who didn’t know how to love.

Every step mattered.

Alex sat up slowly and straightened his clothes. He smoothed his blazer, checked his watch, and stood. There was a meeting in ten minutes. A product development team waiting to present their progress. This wasn’t the time to sulk.

As he walked out of his office, he kept his steps calm. Controlled. On the outside, he looked the same as always-cool, collected, perfectly put together. But inside, his mind was racing.

Mia.

Her name flashed through his thoughts like a breath of calm and chaos all at once.

He didn’t regret taking her to the party.

He’d do it again, even knowing what storm would come from it. She had looked so beautiful, so confident beside him. Like she belonged there. Because she did.

She wasn’t a mistake.

She was the only real thing in a world that constantly demanded fake smiles and hollow alliances.

He stepped into the boardroom where the product team had already gathered. Engineers. Designers. Marketing leads. Everyone was waiting, half rising from their seats when he entered.

He nodded. “Let’s begin.”

For the next hour, Alex forced himself to focus. He listened to presentations. Asked questions. Gave feedback. He made himself present-not just in body, but in mind. It was hard. His thoughts wanted to drift.

Back to Mia’s smile. Back to the ache in his chest that never seemed to go away when he thought about what he was really up against.

But he didn’t let it show.

Because this was the only way forward. One meeting at a time. One small victory after another.

The plan was still in motion.

And nothing-not his father, not the expectations of a broken legacy-was going to stop him from building the life he wanted.

When the meeting ended, he stood slowly, thanking the team. He made a mental note to call his lawyer again. Check on the paperwork. Review the fund transfers. Time was ticking, and he needed everything in place before he made his final move.

As he stepped out of the room, his father followed beside him, close and composed but never gentle. The air between them was tense, as always.

His father didn’t waste time. “I want you to cancel anything that will make you look like a thug for the rest of this week.”

Alex glanced sideways, jaw ticking, but he didn’t respond. No surprise there. His father loved throwing subtle insults cloaked as advice. Alex had learned long ago to stop arguing unless it mattered.

“The dinner was shifted to this week,” his father added.

Alex nodded slightly, still walking. “Sure.”

That was all he said. Then he turned away, taking long strides back toward his office.

He shut the door behind him and let out a breath, loosening his tie slightly as he crossed to his desk.

The meeting had gone fine, but the conversation afterward had left a familiar bad taste in his mouth. One that always came when his father reminded him of the expectations he was never going to meet.

Alex reached for his phone, unlocking it.

Still no reply from Mia.

He had sent her a message hours ago, just something small-checking in, seeing how she was doing.

He hated the silence.

Mia wasn’t the type to play games. If she hadn’t responded, it wasn’t because she was ignoring him. Something had happened.

He leaned back in his chair and ran a hand down his face.

He didn’t want to push her, but his chest felt tight with worry.

When the clock finally ticked past the end of the day, Alex didn’t hesitate. He dialed her number right away. His fingers tapped against the edge of his desk as it rang.

She picked up on the third ring.

Her voice was quiet. “Hello?”

Just that one word and he knew. Something wasn’t right.

“What happened?” he asked instantly. “Did someone hurt you?”

There was a pause. Then her voice, soft and distant. “No. I’m fine.”
