Chapter 132
Alex stared at the woman, not quite sure he heard her right.
“They moved?” he repeated, his voice barely above a whisper.
The woman nodded, her eyes filled with the kind of sympathy that only made things worse. “Yes. They left last night. Seemed like they were in a hurry.”
His brows furrowed. “What do you mean in a hurry?”
She hesitated, looking down before pulling an envelope from the inside of her faded sweater. “Her mother, Mary, gave this to me. She asked me to pass it to the landlord. Said it was important.”
Alex didn’t reach for it yet. He was still trying to piece the words together in his head. None of it made sense.
“I don’t understand. What happened? Why would they leave just like that?”
The woman exhaled like someone who had seen too much already. She shook her head. “I don’t know the full details. But I heard… something happened again with Ethan. The boy, you know? Mary’s son. She said they were done. That this town has done nothing but bring them trouble. Said they wanted peace for once. A fresh start.”
Alex let out a humorless chuckle. It sounded broken even to his own ears. He looked down at the ground, then finally took the envelope from her hand. It felt too light to carry the weight it suddenly dropped in his chest.
He opened it, pulling out a single folded letter.
It was addressed to a Mr. Felix, clearly the landlord.
Mr Felix,
Thank you for always being kind to us. I’m writing to let you know that we won’t be returning to the apartment. My children and I have left Willowcrest. It has become impossible to live here anymore. The troubles keep coming, and I can’t put my family through it anymore. This is goodbye. Please feel free to rent out the apartment to someone else. We won’t be coming back.
Mary Turner
Alex read the words three times, then lowered the paper, his hands trembling.
No. No. This couldn’t be real.
They moved?
How? How could Mia just leave?
He talked to her last night. She didn’t say a word about any of this. She sounded tired, but she always did after work. They even joked a little. She said goodnight.
How could someone say that and disappear hours later?
He looked back at the woman who was still standing there, watching him quietly. Her gaze dropped to the letter in his hand.
Alex folded the letter, hands stiff, and slid it back into the envelope.
“Do you know where they went? Did she say anything at all?”

The woman shook her head slowly. “She didn’t say where. Just that it was far. Said it was best if no one knew.”
Alex stood still, his body frozen, eyes fixed on the woman before him. Her voice echoed in his head like a dull, distant thunder.
His brain scrambled to make sense of it. His heart thumped hard in his chest, each beat a painful knock reminding him that Mia is not here right now. Not just away for a few days. Gone. Vanished.
Without a word.
His jaw clenched. No. That wasn’t like her. This woman had to be mistaken. Mia would never walk away without saying goodbye. Not after everything they shared.
He opened his mouth, but no sound came out.
The woman seemed to sense his unraveling.
“Are you okay, young man?” she asked, a crease forming on her forehead. “Maybe you should sit down.”
Alex ignored her concern. He stepped back, rubbing his hand over his face, then through his hair, trying to ground himself.
“Honestly I think this is best for them after the recent threat”
“Recent threat?” he asked, his voice barely steady.
“Yes,” she said..”Some people came around yesterday morning screaming, calling them names. I didn’t hear all of it, but they were really angry. Said Ethan caused some kind of trouble again.”
Alex felt bile rise in his throat.
The woman went on, unaware of the storm rising behind Alex’s eyes. “Late last night, another group of men showed up. Scary-looking guys. They banged on the door, forced their way inside. I almost called the police, but the landlord said to stay out of it. Said it wasn’t our business.”
Alex could barely hear her now. All he could see was Mia-her soft smile
The woman was still talking. “Mary said enough is enough. That she wasn’t going to continue living in fear. She said if she stayed, they’d end up in body bags. So she packed everything fast and left.”
Just like that?
That doesn’t make sense.
The Turners can’t just leave Willowcrest overnight. This is their home… This is insane.
People don’t just wake up one morning, pack their bags and leave a town they’ve stayed in all their life without proper preparation to move.
Maybe they have been planning it?
“Do you know where they went? Any clue at all?”
The woman shook her head. “She didn’t say.”
“I uhm, what about the last daughter”

“Mia?”
“Yes Mia, she left with them?”
“Yes they left together” the woman says.
Alex refuses to believe this.
“She was carrying her bag too?” he asked… Maybe Mia was seeing her family off.
