Chapter 41
Alex has made up his mind. He has to give her that money.
The guilt was getting out of hand, he’s becoming a different person every hour.
There was only one way to make it stop…..Give her the money, forget it ever happened.
That’s what he told himself. It wasn’t about her, it was about him. About finally putting an end to the unease that has consumed him since that night.
His phone buzzed, a text from Zoe lighting up his screen.
“We need to talk. Let’s meet up
later.”
Alex stared at the message for a moment before typing a quick response.
“Can’t. Busy.”
He tossed his phone aside. Whatever Zoe wanted could wait. He needed to sort out this mess with Turner first. Maybe then he could breathe again, feel like himself again.
With that thought, Alex found himself at Casa Lounge, his usual spot in the corner of the elegant bar. The noise of the crowd boomed around him, but his focus was elsewhere.
Lucas joined him at the table, his friend already ranting about some fight.
“I betted on that idiot, and he had to fucking lose!” Lucas groaned, slamming his drink down on the table.
Alex wasn’t listening. His eyes scanned the room, his pulse picking up speed when he spotted her.
There she was.
Mia Turner.
She was smiling, serving drinks. Alex watched her move with a grace that seemed out of place in this environment, and for a moment, he felt his chest tighten.
What the hell was wrong with him?
His heart skipped a beat, then another, and Alex shook his head. Maybe he needed to see Dr. Shawn. The way his body was reacting lately wasn’t normal. It couldn’t be.
Lucas kept talking, oblivious to Alex’s distraction. “That’s why I don’t bet anything big unless it’s your fight,” Lucas muttered, taking another sip of his drink.
Alex forced himself to look at his friend, though his mind was still on Mia. “I lose sometimes, you know,” he said, glancing back at her as she laughed at something a customer said.
“I can count on one hand how many times you’ve lost a fight,” Lucas said, rolling his eyes. “You haven’t lost a big fight in years, Alex. I should be a billionaire by now, but you don’t fight all the time.”
Alex chuckled, leaning back in his chair. “You’re a billionaire, Lucas.”
“Not a trillionaire like you,” Lucas shot back with a grin.

Alex smirked, shaking his head. “My father’s the trillionaire, not me.”
“Same thing,” Lucas said with a wave of his hand, already moving on to another topic.
But Alex wasn’t paying attention anymore. His entire existence was focused on one person, on every movement she made as she worked her shift.
When a different waiter came to take their order, Alex almost told him to call Mia over instead. But he stopped himself, biting back the urge.
It wasn’t normal, this fixation he had. He needed to get this over with and move on.
As the evening dragged on, Alex kept one eye on the clock. He knew when her shift ended, knew she would be heading to the bus stop soon.
When the time came, he told Lucas he’d see him later and left without waiting for a response.
Mia said goodbye to Emily, who still had a few more hours left in her shift.
The cool night air greeted her as she stepped outside, and she took a deep breath, hoping it would calm her nerves.
But it didn’t.
Her mind was spinning, thoughts of Alex Blackwell crashing through her. Seeing him doesn’t do anything to help in the ‘forget about him’ department.
Don’t think about him. Don’t think about him.
Mia repeated the mantra in her head, trying to block out the memories that refused to leave her alone. She had spent every day since that night trying to forget it ever happened, but it was impossible.
Because deep down, she knew the truth.
She didn’t hate him. She wanted to. She should have. But she doesn’t.
And that hurt more than anything.
She kicked a stone on the sidewalk, her frustration bubbling to the surface. A tear slipped down her cheek before she could stop it, and she quickly wiped it away.
It wasn’t supposed to be like this. She and Alex were never supposed to happen. They were from two different worlds, and she had no business being in his.
Her heart clenched as she thought of him, of the way he had looked at her that night before everything went wrong.
