The pile of evidence already buried them, and no one cared if another crime was added.

When the report reached the higher–ups and they learned one–third of the supplies were gone, fury swept through them like fire.

The orders came down fast and cold. The Workshop 1 manager and every person tied to him were executed on the spot.

Until a replacement could be found, Workshop 1 was placed under Sage’s command.

Through this storm, Sage not only climbed in rank, but he uncovered a traitor hidden among his own men.

The security guard with space–based powers who had joined in the scheme was dragged out. Sage sent him straight to the Divine Institute for experimentation.

That man had once been a squad leader.

Not long after, Theresa was summoned to Sage’s office.

“Were you the one who took the cargo?” Sage asked, his smile cutting across his face like a blade.

“Are you trying to thank me?” Theresa answered with a shrug. She yanked a chair out, sat right down in front of him, and grabbed a piece of fruit off his desk. She bit into it with a loud crunch.

“I do owe you thanks,” Sage admitted with a slow nod.

He reached into his desk, pulled out a gleaming A–Rank card, and slid it toward her. “From today, you’ve been promoted. You are now a security captain.”

Theresa’s eyes went wide.

She nearly choked on the apple.

She had come here undercover, and now she was being promoted.

“A captain’s clearance is higher than a guard’s,” Sage explained. “You can request access to Workshop 2. Workshop 3 is off–limits for now. But when cargo moves, you may enter with the space–based ability guards.”

Before he even finished, Theresa snatched the A–Rank card.

“I was born for this. Being captain is exactly my calling”

Sage blinked, his expression flat.

Theresa pocketed the card and turned to leave.

“You’re just walking out?” he asked.

“What else should I do? You offering me dinner?”

Sage’s lashes lowered, then lifted. “If you want, I can.”

“Forget it. I couldn’t afford to eat what you serve.”

She left without looking back.

When the door clicked shut, Sage finally allowed himself a small laugh.

As captain, Theresa was given ten subordinates.

“Good day, leader!”

“Good day, leader!”

Their voices boomed together.

Theresa glanced over them without much interest. “I don’t have many rules. Just one thing— stay low. Keep quiet. If trouble comes, back away. Don’t look for glory. When you work, slack off if you can. If you can skate by, then skate by. Never take on more than you need.”

The ten men stood silent.

“Of course, if I get something good, I’ll cut you in.”

“Thank you, leader!” they shouted.

Theresa dismissed them with a wave, then handed them off to Quentin.

By the time she was done, most of them couldn’t even remember her face.

She was a captain who melted into the background.

From that day on, Theresa had to show up for roll call every morning.

The massive gates opened and let her in.

Inside, the layout mirrored Workshop 1.

A wide freight corridor stretched first, lined with crates and pallets. Beyond that were the production halls.

This site manufactured clothing, tools, household goods, and weapons.

The manager’s office was set inside a lone tall building at the center of the grounds.

Theresa made her way toward it, but voices carried to her before she arrived.
