Gian and Kirsten exchanged a knowing glance. They'd known for a while that River Atwood had a thing for Danielle, so seeing him "run into" her here made his intentions perfectly clear.

Kirsten smiled. "Yes, what a coincidence."

"Since fate brought us together, why don't I join you?"

River couldn't have been happier. He immediately pulled up a chair next to Danielle and asked attentively, "Danielle, what would you like to eat? The signature dish here is the steak with black truffle sauce. It's excellent. Should I order one for you?"

Danielle felt a touch of exasperation. "No, thank you. I can order for myself." She had no intention of leading on a man she wasn't interested in.

Watching River dote on Danielle, Gian sighed inwardly. He knew her heart belonged to Alexander, and River's efforts were likely in vain.

Kirsten, however, addressed it head-on with a teasing tone. "River, you're being incredibly attentive to our Danielle. Anyone who didn't know better would think you were trying to woo her."

River remained composed, making no effort to deny it. "I just think Danielle is a wonderful woman who deserves to be treated well," he said frankly.

Danielle avoided his gaze, looking down at her menu and pretending not to have heard.

Sensing the tension, Gian stepped in to smooth things over. "Alright, let's drop it and order. I'm starving."

Throughout the meal, River catered to Danielle's every need, serving her food and keeping her glass full. She tried to refuse several times, but he always had a ready excuse, leaving her no choice but to accept with a resigned sigh.

"I know," Danielle interrupted him quietly. "I've already told him how I feel. The rest is up to him. If he can't move past his reservations, then I'll have to accept that."

A proud man like Alexander would despise nothing more than someone's pity.
