Just then, a Maybach glided to a stop beside them.
Brian stepped out.
…
Inside the van, the situation had been completely reversed. The three men were tied up like earthworms, their faces mostly unharmed but their bodies clearly bruised.
Renata leaned against the van doorframe. "I left one of them conscious," she said to Elara. "Ask whatever you want."
Elara met her gaze, and Renata understood immediately. She backed away a good fifteen feet, giving them space but keeping them in her line of sight. Elara gave her a slight nod of thanks.
"You work for Mrs. Lawrence?" she asked Neil.
Pinned between two of Brian's imposing bodyguards, Neil struggled to breathe but held onto his pride. "I'll never betray my boss."
Elara slipped off her shoe. She raised the sharp stiletto heel, aiming it directly at his eye.
"Answer me seriously."
Neil swallowed hard. "I was just following orders. If I wasn't reliable, she wouldn't have kept me around this long."
Fair enough. It was a sideways admission.
"So…" Elara paused. "Are you the best fighter she has?"
"Of course."
Elara raised her shoe again.
"It's the truth this time, I swear!" Neil yelped.
"The assassin I saw was tall and thin," Renata called out from fifteen feet away. "He doesn't match this guy's build."
Elara glanced over at her. The whole point of making her stand far away was so she wouldn't overhear, but her hearing was too sharp.
Renata clamped her mouth shut.
Elara turned her attention back to Neil. "Besides you, does Fiona have anyone else she can use?"
Neil sighed. "No. A woman in her position knows that the more people involved, the more can go wrong. There are very few people she trusts, and even fewer she'd dare to use. She only ever contacts me directly, never through a third party."
His words made Elara frown slightly.
"Miss Jules, she doesn't actually hate you that much. She just wanted you away from the eldest son for a while. Why don't you… take a vacation?"
Brian, growing impatient, got out of his car and walked over. "When are you leaving with me?"
Elara's expression was cool. "I need to go talk to Jason."
Brian let out a derisive snort.
Elara looked at Renata. "Once this is settled, please return Fiona's dog to her."
"Fine," Renata agreed. "But you're really going with him?" She shot a look at Brian.
Elara nodded and started walking toward the restaurant's back entrance. She hadn't even reached the spot where she'd been abducted when Jason found her.
"What took you so long? Where did you go?"
Before Elara could answer, Jason's face darkened. Brian had appeared behind her.
"We were just having a chat," Brian said, his tone light and breezy. "You're only just now looking for her? What if I were a dangerous person? Would you be preparing to collect her body?"
Elara shot him a look but said nothing.
Jason lifted his chin, his response dripping with arrogance. "I'm not like you, keeping a murderer's brother and a vicious stepsister by your side, letting them humiliate your own wife. When she's with me, she's safe."
