The man's face was devoid of expression, but even through the glass, the oppressive weight of his presence was suffocating.

"Open the door. Let me out," Elara demanded.

The driver glanced in the rearview mirror, and after getting a nod from Brian, he unlocked the doors. Elara scrambled out of the car and ran toward Zane.

The anger and ice that had been churning in Zane's chest vanished the moment he saw her rushing toward him. The hard lines of his face softened involuntarily.

"Are you okay?" he asked.

"I'm fine," Elara mumbled.

"Are you done talking to him?"

She shot him a surprised look, then lowered her gaze. "Yes."

"Get in the car and wait for me," Zane said.

Without giving Brian another glance, Elara slid into the back of the Lincoln. A sharp pang of pain shot through Brian, but he quickly suppressed it.

A provocative smile played on his lips as he spoke first. "Forcing my car to a stop like that, Mr. Lawrence… wasn't that a bit reckless? It seems you have little regard for her safety."

Zane's gaze was flat and cold. "Don't worry. I don't take risks I can't manage. Her safety is a higher priority than my own."

Brian let out a short, sharp laugh. "So, does the Grove family know you two are together?"

Zane's lips thinned into a hard line.

Brian's smile widened. "Old Mr. Grove isn't a soft touch, and you're still beholden to them. Since you married his granddaughter's memorial tablet, you're expected to be faithful to her 'ghost.' If he finds out about Elara, how confident are you that you can protect her?"

A flicker of icy scorn crossed Zane's eyes. His voice was low but each word cut like a razor. "I'm not you. At least I would never let the woman I love be so cornered she has to divorce me just to stay alive. As for whether I can protect her, you can just watch and see. At my worst, I'm still better than someone who couldn't even keep his own wife and is left with nothing but sour grapes."

Without waiting to see the pained, ugly expression on Brian's face, Zane turned and got back into his car.
