To Love a Shadow To Be the Sun novel Chapter 380

"Chairman Lawrence," Elara greeted him, cautiously taking a seat across from him.

"You're my son's 'fiancée' now," Victor said, his tone gentle but carrying the unmistakable weight of someone used to being obeyed. "There's no need for such formality. You can call me Victor, and I'll call you Elara."

Elara nodded. "Jason has been very kind to me. I only hope—"

Victor raised a hand, cutting her off. "I understand all of that. People like you, who know how to repay a kindness, are rare these days."

"I just want to have a clear conscience," she said softly.

He pushed a small cup of tea toward her, his eyes filled with undisguised admiration. "My wife can be impulsive. I've spoiled her over the years. I apologize on her behalf for what happened the other night. You must have been frightened."

Elara was taken aback. Was he meeting her just to apologize for Fiona?

She picked up the teacup but didn't drink. After a moment's thought, she lowered her eyes. "Actually, I should be the one to apologize to Mrs. Lawrence. That night, she locked me in the room with Mr. Fielding, and I had to find a way to get myself out. I never imagined he would be brazen enough to attack her directly."

A knowing smile touched Victor's lips, as if he'd expected this response. "When cornered, people will instinctively choose the path most beneficial to them. There's nothing wrong with that. I've already spoken with her. It's good that you know how to protect yourself. But the Lawrence family still owes you a measure of respect, and I want to offer that compensation personally."

"I haven't lost anything, you really don't have to…"

Elara tried to refuse, but Victor calmly produced two elegant tickets and placed them on the table. "It's not money or anything material, so don't feel pressured. They're just two tickets to the ballet—*Les Misérables*, for Thursday night. I thought it might be to your taste."
