"Not even your sister-in-law, Fiona?" Elara challenged, her eyes boring into his.
"To pull something off that cleanly… Neil doesn't have the skill," he stated. "The only reason Fiona got away with eliminating my brother's other women was because… no one ever bothered to seriously investigate."
Elara scoffed. "So in the end, you're still covering for them. Including Pearl, who's living in Lawrence Manor right now."
"It's even less likely to be Pearl," Zane said, his tone resolute.
His unwavering defense of Pearl ignited Elara's anger. "Would you bet your life on it?"
Zane finally frowned, his voice hardening. "I understand you're desperate to find the culprit, but you can't let Brian's words cloud your judgment and make you suspect everyone. If he's so trustworthy, why did you divorce him in the first place?"
His question struck a nerve. A look of clear pain and self-mockery flashed in Elara's eyes. "You're right. I have no judgment. I'm paranoid. How could I possibly compare to the Grove family daughter you've carried in your heart for a decade? You were willing to marry her memorial tablet; of course you'd favor and defend her family. And what am I? We've only known each other for a couple of months. There's no comparison."
Her words hit him exactly where it hurt the most. The man's face turned grim, his tone colder than she had ever heard it. "Elara, you shouldn't say that. And you shouldn't think it."
"Why?" she shot back with a cold laugh. "Because I hit the nail on the head and you can't explain it away?"
The air in the car instantly froze. Zane's jaw was clenched tight as he stared ahead, silent. Elara turned to look out her window. A heavy, oppressive silence fell between them. Quincy, driving, could feel the cold sweat on his palms.
Just then, the car pulled up to the entrance of Ignition Dynamics. Elara pushed the door open and walked away without a backward glance.
Zane's brow was furrowed in a deep frown. He watched until her figure disappeared into the building, still not saying a word.
Quincy glanced in the rearview mirror several times before venturing, "Sir, should I conduct a thorough investigation into Miss Grove?"
