Sophia stepped out in a light blue dress. It was a classic cut, nothing too flashy, and nowhere near as attention- grabbing as the black one.
But Richard looked completely satisfied.
Everything that needed to stay hidden was properly hidden. Sophia looked just like the picture of a well–bred lady, the kind one wouldn’t give a second glance at on the street.
When Sophia had tried on the gown for Richard earlier, she hadn’t felt anything special about it.
But now, with him looking her up and down, she started feeling uneasy and a bit squirmy without meaning
Her nerves got the best of her, and she awkwardly fidgeted, not sure where to put her hands or feet.
“Does it look good?” Sophia asked, her voice laced with nervousness.
Annabelle tapped her chin and said, “To be real, it doesn’t beat the black one. That one was sweet but had a bit of spice–a total knockout. This blue one is just sweet, no bite at all.”
The saleslady thought, ‘Now that’s a hot take!‘
The saleslady nearly gave Annabelle a thumbs–up. She chimed in, “Honestly, both dresses look amazing, but Mr. Sterling has a real knack for picking out winners. They’re both absolutely perfect for Ms. Evans!”
Richard looked at Sophia and asked, “Well, what do you think?”
Sophia thought, ‘Honestly, that black dress is a bit too bold for meeting the family.
‘Better play it safe and stick to something more low–key.’
“The light blue one works. Could you wrap it up for me?” Sophia asked the saleslady.
The saleslady looked a bit let down. She suggested, “How about you take both? That black one is bound to come in handy for some big event.”
Sophia shook her head and said, “Just this one, thanks.”
The saleslady headed downstairs to ring it up, while Sophia ducked back into the changing room to swap out of the dress and into her own clothes.
When Sophia came out of the changing room, one of the salesladies slipped in behind her to put away the remaining dresses.
Annabelle looped her arm through Sophia’s and offered, “That black dress was a total showstopper! Want me to get it for you?”
“It’s okay, Annabelle. Honestly, I just can’t think of a place where I’d actually wear it,” Sophia said.
Sophia grew up in a backward town, and even now that she was well–off, she just couldn’t bring herself to go. wild with spending.
She thought, ‘Seriously, blowing 200 grand on a dress I’d wear once or twice? I’d rather use that money to help build a school up in the remote areas–at least that way, some kids get a real shot at learning.
Annabelle sighed.
By the time they got downstairs, Richard had already paid for the dress. Sophia was genuinely surprised.
“Mr. Sterling, I can’t just accept this for nothing. Let me pay you back,” Sophia said, grabbing her phone and transferring the money right away.
Richard’s eyes darkened slightly as he said, “Ms. Evans, you really don’t let anything slide, do you?”
Sophia smiled and said, “No matter how close we are, I can’t just mooch off you.”
Annabelle rolled her eyes at their endless formalities and teased, “Ms. Evans‘ and ‘Mr. Sterling‘? Seriously, can we please not be so formal? Just act normal for once, will you?”
Sophia squeezed Annabelle’s arm, signaling her to quiet down.
Honestly, Sophia was perfectly happy sticking to the whole ‘Ms. Evans‘ and ‘Mr. Sterling‘ routine with Richard. It just felt safer that way.
“It’s getting late, so Annabelle and I will let you get back to work, Mr. Sterling,” Sophia said.
Richard gave her a slight nod and said, “Alright. Goodbye.”
“Goodbye,” Sophia replied.
Sophia tugged Annabelle toward the elevator, and Richard kept his eyes on them until the doors slid shut. Only then did he quietly double back to the counter and buy that black dress.
The salesladies were all totally floored.
She thought, ‘Wait, Mr. Sterling sneaked back and bought that dress? Is he going to surprise Ms. Evans or what?
‘He acted like he didn’t care at all earlier, but clearly, his actions speak louder than words—you just can’t trust that poker face!‘
After leaving the mall, Sophia and Annabelle swung by Pioneer Institute.
The formula for skin regeneration was almost complete–the data just needed a final polish. Sophia double- checked everything, then handed over the finished reports to Annabelle.
“Annabelle, go ahead and kick off the patent application,” Sophia said with a satisfied grin.
Back when Linda stole the data, Sophia had deliberately altered some key numbers.
Honestly, if Linda had been more careful, she would’ve spotted the discrepancies right away.
