Sophia gazed at the darkening horizon and said, “Maybe it’s just because deep down, they know they’re in the wrong–so facing me terrifies them.”
The more guilty they feel, the more scared they get…which just makes them push me even further away, Sophia thought.
Annabelle reached out and put her hand on Sophia’s shoulder. “So, Sophie, what’s your move now?”
“They showed no mercy, so neither will I,” Sophia answered, her voice cold and unwavering.
Annabelle jumped in right away, “Seriously, if you ever need backup, just let me know! Smacking down those jerks and watching them eat dirt is basically my calling.”
“Sure,” Sophia said.
Sophia could tell Annabelle was definitely enjoying the drama a bit too much, and just shook her head helplessly.
Dinner was at Sierra’s place, and she really worked her magic with just one chicken–turned it into three mouthwatering dishes, making everyone wonder how she did it.
She served up a spicy stir–fried chicken, a soup simmered with chicken bones, and some cold shredded chicken breast–every bite was homemade perfection.
She also whipped up a few stir–fried seasonal veggies, all fresh and bursting with flavor.
It was Annabelle’s first time tasting food cooked over a wood fire, and she couldn’t help gushing, “This stuff is seriously delicious!”
At dinner, Derek and Sierra started sharing about their eldest daughter, who was only five years older than Sophia. She went off to work in the city really early, ended up with a city guy, and they got married a few
years ago.
But honestly, she picked the wrong people–her husband’s whole family was nothing but bloodsuckers, and they’d been giving her hell for years now.
Whenever Derek mentioned their oldest daughter, he’d just let out a heavy sigh, and Sierra would quietly dab at her eyes.
“Sophie, before you even think about tying the knot, you’d better keep your eyes wide open. You know, the kind of guy they talk about online these days… What’s it called? The guy glued to his mom?” Sierra asked.
Annabelle piped up, “Mama’s boy.”
“Right, right, a mama’s boy! If you ever come across one of those, run for your life. Otherwise, his whole family will chew you up and spit out your bones–you’ll have absolutely nothing left,” Sierra cautioned.
Sophia didn’t say a word about already being married–or that she was halfway out the door and planning to file for divorce.
After dinner, Derek took care of the dishes, Sierra started making up the beds, and Sophia helped out wherever she could.
Sierra smiled apologetically. “We only just finished building this little house, so it’s nothing compared to what you’re used to in the city. I hope it’s comfortable enough for you two.”
Sierra was always catching those viral short dramas online, so when Annabelle rolled up, she could tell it was a Land Rover–or maybe something just as fancy.
She’d heard rides like that cost a fortune.
And Annabelle wasn’t just driving a luxury car–she had the newest phone in her hand, and that purse on her shoulder might cost hundreds of thousands.
Sierra couldn’t help fretting, wondering if her humble home might be too plain, not up to hosting folks as upscale as them.
Annabelle leaned against the cabinet, lending a hand here and there with an easy smile. “Sierra, I’ve been camping with friends–sometimes we just slept wherever, even by the roadside.
“Honestly, your place is way nicer than what I’m used to out there.”
“Really, you actually slept by the road? Could you even get any rest? Weren’t there a lot of mosquitoes?” Sierra asked, her face full of worry.
Annabelle let out a laugh. “There were mosquitoes, sure, but we had tents and mosquito repellent–so it wasn’t a big deal.”
“Well, that’s good then. I just don’t understand young people nowadays–there’s a perfectly good house sitting here, but you still prefer sleeping out in the open,” Sierra said, shaking her head.
Once the beds were ready, Sierra went to fetch some hot water so they could freshen up.
After they washed up, Sierra reminded them to get some rest and then went back to the kitchen to get busy.
Sophia couldn’t sleep, so she grabbed Annabelle and headed outside for a walk down the narrow country lane.
The country air was crisp and clean–no car fumes at all–and when Sophia looked up, she could actually see stars scattered across the sky.
Still, something about tonight’s moon felt unusual. Its halo was actually a soft pink, casting everything in a dreamlike glow.
Annabelle pointed up at the stars. “Sophie, check out the sky tonight–it’s beautiful! Even the moon’s glowing pink.”
Sophia furrowed her brows. “That’s the legendary blood moon.”
Rumor had it that on the eve of the earthquake seven years ago, the sky was marked by the same strange omen-a blood moon.
Could Ginkgo Town be facing the devastation of another earthquake?‘ Sophia thought, the idea sending a
