“She’s the one who should leave, not you” David’s voice rang out as he stepped into the room.
He took firm hold of Emily’s wrist, his eyes fixed on Sophia with a mix of anger and resentment. “Why did you have to come back?”
“This is my home,” Sophia replied, her anger rising. “Why shouldn’t I be here?”
Emily was the one living the lie, yet everyone was treating Sophia like the unwanted guest.
She had suffered abuse from Emily’s parents for years, while Emily enjoyed the life that should have been hers. Coming back to reclaim it was her only choice.
Sophia felt the sting of tears as all her pent-up hurt and resentment threatened to overflow.
“I’m your real sister, David,” she said, her voice thick with emotion. “We share the same blood.”
David’s face hardened, a muscle twitching in his jaw. “Emily is my sister,” he said coldly. “The only one I’ll ever acknowledge.”
In that moment, Sophia’s last hope shattered. The world around her seemed to fade away, leaving only the harsh lines of David’s angry face.
A bitter laugh escaped her, followed by a flood of tears. ‘How could I have been so naive? So blind to the truth?’ she asked herself in her mind.
Deep down, she’d always known she would never be welcome here, never be treated as family. Yet she’d still risked everything, desperately hoping for even a shred of their affection.
Then, through the haze of her pain, she heard someone calling her name.
She looked up through tear-filled eyes to see Lucas standing before her.
He felt like her last hope, and her gaze clung to him as if he were her only anchor in the storm.
“Lucas, I’m telling the truth. She did bump into me, but I never saw any earrings. So who do you believe? Her or me?” Sophia asked, her voice desperate.
There was no question about it-“her” meant Emily.
Lucas’s eyes flickered with guilt. To side with Sophia now would be to confirm the embarrassing truth about the contents of Emily’s bag. He couldn’t bear to subject Emily to that kind of scrutiny.
“That’s enough, Sophia,” Lucas cut in, his voice sharp. “If you want rubies, I’ll buy them for you. It’s not like I
A wave of shocked gasps rippled through the room.
Lucas’s face darkened with rage. His hand snapped out, clamping around her wrist with bone-crushing force. “Sophia, you’ve crossed a line!”
Sophia simply relaxed her grip, letting the glass fall where it shattered into pieces at Emily’s feet.
She offered a slight, mocking tilt of her head. “How clumsy of me.”
A dead silence blanketed the room.
“Apologize to Emily now,” Lucas ordered, his gaze sharp and dangerous. But Sophia held her ground, her own gaze steady and unyielding.
The tense standoff was suddenly interrupted as the projection screen in the center of the villa flickered to life, displaying a sequence of images.
The first thing that captured everyone’s attention was the clear image of an opened condom.
