Chapter 176
Sophia pictured Richard’s drop–dead gorgeous face and told herself, ‘As long as I keep my wild thoughts in check, we’re totally innocent–just plain old friends.
She grabbed a chunk of food and stuffed it into Annabelle’s mouth. “Honestly, you never shut up–even a mouthful of food can’t silence you.”
With her cheeks crammed full, Annabelle mumbled, “I’m just hoping you’ll climb straight to the top, showered with love from Uncle Richard, only the best of the best.”
Especially if she could roast Lucas–the king of jerks–while she’s at it.
She couldn’t wait to see Lucas crushed with regret, knowing he’d never win Sophie back–no matter how hard he tried.
After her failed marriage, Sophia found she just didn’t crave the whole men–and–women romance thing like she did three years ago.
She took a bite and joked, “Honestly, men can’t even compete with this meal right now–it’s way more flavorful.”
She wasn’t trying to be all superior or anything.
Besides, she still had a hard time believing that someone like Richard–this absolute golden boy–would ever look her way.
She thought, ‘Seriously, what do I have going on? No knockout figure, my face is pretty average, and I’m just kind of plain and boring!
Richard’s the kind of guy who’s met every amazing woman under the sun–what would he ever see in me?
Sophia wondered, ‘Maybe I’m just being delusional, reading way too much into a bit of kindness and pretending it’s love.’
Outside the tent, Richard stood there with two cans of milk in hand, catching every word of their conversation.
He went completely silent.
Even if Sophia hadn’t put him toe–to–toe with roast chicken, he still felt like he’d lost out to a drumstick.
‘Real nice,’ Richard thought to himself, equal parts amused and annoyed.
Annabelle cocked her head, watching Sophia devour the roast chicken. She grinned and teased, “You know, it was Uncle Richard who went out of his way to snag this mouthwatering food for us.”
Sophia just dodged, “That’s exactly why it smells so good. Less talk, more eating–get on with it!”
Annabelle glanced at Sophia’s nonchalant attitude and couldn’t help but think, ‘Looks like Uncle Richard’s
quest for love is going to be an epic journey.

After finishing her meal, Sophia was feeling a bit more lively. She packed up her lunchbox, carried the bag out, and stepped outside the tent.
Volunteers were busy disinfecting the entire square.
In the wake of disaster, everyone worried about disease outbreaks, so volunteers made sure to sanitize everything after every meal–right on schedule.
The air finally smelled fresher, without that lingering disinfectant stench.
Sophia tossed her trash into the communal bin and headed back.
The setting sun cast a long shadow behind her. As she walked past a tent, familiar voices floated out from inside.
“Richard, I’ve never seen you go out of your way for someone like this before. What’s up? You got your eye on that girl or something?” someone said.
That voice sounded like Edward, the Major General and disaster relief commander.
Then, a voice she knew all too well chimed in, “What’s the point if I like her? In her eyes, I can’t even compare to a meal.”
That obviously sulky tone could only belong to Richard.
Edward’s mocking voice floated out from the tent. “Richard, if you say that out loud, people are seriously going to laugh their heads off.”
Richard shot back, “Tease me again and I’ll knock your teeth out.”
“Bring it on! Let’s see who packs a bigger punch,” Edward egged him on.
Overhearing their childish argument, Sophia stifled a laugh. Instantly, all sound from inside the tent cut off.
Covering her mouth, Sophia worried they’d come out and find her, so she hurried away, slipping off before she could get busted.
As soon as she disappeared into the gap between the tents, Richard and Edward walked out.
Edward looked totally relaxed, almost a little cocky. “So, what are you gonna do?”
Richard’s handsome face was shrouded in darkness, giving him an air of mystery.
“What else can I do?” Richard answered, voice steady.
He wasn’t about to give up.
