Richard glanced in the rearview mirror. Sophia was slumped against the seat, her cheeks flushed.

He hesitated for a moment, then pushed open the car door and got out. He took off his suit jacket and walked over to the back door.

He opened the door, leaned in, and draped his jacket over her shoulders. He gazed at her sleeping face in silence.

Asleep, she looked like a child, pure and innocent.

The streetlights outside spilled across her face. Her lips, stained crimson from the wine, looked just like a rose blooming at midnight-so alluring he couldn’t help but be drawn in.

Richard stared at her, fingers twitching by his sides. For a moment, it was like he’d completely fallen under her spell- captivated and lost, he slowly reached out, unable to resist.

Just as his fingers were about to touch her lips, a sudden honk snapped him back to reality.

He glanced down; his hand was only a whisper away from her lips-just one tiny move, and he would’ve brushed her mouth

Feeling like he’d been burned, Richard yanked his hand back, quickly stepped out of the car, and shut the door behind him.

Richard stood there, ramrod straight; his breath came harder and harder, and his heart was thudding out of control.

After a long moment, he took a deep breath, wrestling down the burning ache of unsatisfied desire. Then he opened the car door and got into the driver’s seat.

Sophia was tipsy and unusually sweet, staying quietly obedient as Richard gently scooped her up and carried her out of the car. She remained soft and still, barely reacting at all.

Jason’s eyes sparkled with delight when he saw Richard carrying a woman into the house.

‘Well, well, looks like Mr. Sterling finally gets it-now he’s even bringing girls home,’ Jason thought, grinning from ear to ear.

Jason wasted no time ordering the staff to whip up some nourishing soup.

Once he’d given his orders, he hustled over, sneaking a curious glance at the woman’s face in Richard’s arms.

When Jason realized it was Sophia, he was momentarily stunned. “Mr. Sterling, wait-is that Ms. Evans?”

Jason actually liked Sophia, but lately, scandals about her were making headlines all over town.

Given his place in the household, the last thing Jason wanted was for Richard to get tangled up with Sophia.

Richard said coolly, “Tidy up Ms. Evans’s old room. I’ll carry her over there.”

Jason hesitated. “The sheets were washed a couple of days ago, but haven’t been put back on yet. How about you take her to the guest room on the first floor for now?”

Richard frowned. “It’s too damp downstairs-it’s not good for her. I’ll take her to my room for now. Let me know once her bed’s ready.”

“Richard?” Jason watched helplessly as Richard carried Sophia up the spiral staircase, disappearing in just a few steps.

He muttered under his breath, “Why’s he taking her to his own room? Guess Mr. Sterling is totally dropping the act now.”

But Sophia’s reputation was a mess right now-getting involved with her could tarnish Richard’s name, too.

Jason couldn’t help but shake his head.

He called over a servant and told them to go upstairs and get the guest room ready.

Richard cradled Sophia in one arm, leaned over to pull back the covers, and gently laid her down on the bed.

Thinking she was back home, Sophia kicked off her high heels, then rolled right into the middle of the bed and burrowed under the blankets, out like a light.

Richard stood at the bedside, watching her with a mix of amusement and helplessness as she moved with such effortless

grace.

“You little drunk cat,” he murmured.

He loosened his tie, unbuttoned his shirt, and headed to the bathroom for a shower.

Jason had the sheets and blankets swapped out, then came by to knock on the door. There was no response from inside.

He couldn’t shake a bad feeling, but he didn’t dare just walk in-who knew what awkward thing he might end up witnessing.

Jason called out, “Mr. Sterling? You still up?”

No response.

He pressed his ear to the door, catching the faint sound of running water. Jason drew a long sigh.

‘All these years, and Mr. Sterling finally gets love-only to fall for someone who’s already married, Jason couldn’t help but sigh.

‘Man, talk about bad luck,’ he muttered to himself.
