Not waiting for an answer, Emily delivered the final blow. “Because some people are simply born to stand in
the shadows.
“Lucas told me he can’t stand the humble air you carry. He said that you’re not fit to shine my shoes, and that being intimate with you was a moment of weakness he deeply regrets.
“If I were you, I would have ended my miserable life long ago.” Her words hung in the air, each one a carefully sharpened blade.
Sophia waited until Emily finished, her eyes cold and piercing. “What’s so noble about you? Taking my castoff’s and treating them like treasures, or stealing my life and being proud of it?
“If I’m so unlikable, what does that make you? Need me to hold up a mirror so you can see what you really look like?
“All you do is steal people’s families and partners. Is thievery some kind of family tradition?
“If someone as shameless as you gets to live well, why should I die?”
Emily had been enjoying her taunts, thinking Sophia was an easy target. Now, she was seething at the unexpected defiance.
“Shut your mouth, you bitch! I’ll tear that smirk off your face.” Emily lunged forward, hand raised to strike.
But Sophia was not a pushover anymore. She’d been biding her time since Emily’s return, swallowing one insult after another. Now that Emily had thrown the first punch, Sophia wasn’t about to hold back.
Without warning, she grabbed a cardboard box and slammed it into Emily’s face.
The blow came too fast to avoid, and Emily stumbled back, blood trickling from her nose as tears welled up in her eyes. “You bitch!” she screamed, her voice shaking with rage. “I’ll kill you for this!”
Sophia merely brushed off her hands, leaving her things scattered on the floor. “Don’t worry, Emily,” she said with icy calm. “You and Lucas deserve each other.” And with that, she turned and walked away.
Behind her, Emily’s screams and curses echoed through the hallway, loud enough to draw stares from every
corner.
When Lucas hurried over after hearing the noise, Sophia was long gone, and only Emily was left sobbing violently.
Never having suffered such indignity, she demanded that Lucas make things right.
“I jumped straight into work after university,” Linda explained, a note of weariness in her voice. “I’ve saved up some money, and I think it’s time I actually saw a bit of the world.”
“I get that,” Sophia said, her support evident. She slid a business card across the table. “When you’re ready to come back, an interview at this place will be waiting for you.”
Linda examined the business card. Her breath caught when she realized it bore the direct contact of the elusive director of the Pioneer Institute.
“Sophia,” she whispered, awe coloring her voice, “how on earth did you get this?”
“Let’s just call it a trade secret,” Sophia replied with a mysterious smile.
Though curious, Linda knew better than to pry. The chance to work at the Pioneer Institute was enough to make her put her own travel plans on hold.
The confrontation between Sophia and Emily became instant gossip.
Lucas accompanied Emily to the emergency room, where doctors confirmed her nose was fractured.
